L322 BMW vs Jaguar Reliability

Hi mates,

I know this one is a bit beaten to death but the threads ive reviewed recently seem to be a bit older, and at the time most Jags didn't have enough KM for comparison and the BMW issues included teething and poor maintenance with the "single seal" trans ect.

I was looking at buying a rover a couple years ago, but I got lost and joined the Navy for a bit, now im back on land and looking to go out bush again.

Essentially in the next couple months im purchasing another 4x4 for a hunting rig, I can do almost all maintenance myself and wont be barely doing any KM less than 2-3k km a year

Feel free to comment specifically on

Generally which year is best and why?
Which engine is easiest to work on?
Which has the least engine problems?
Which has the least other mechanical issues? Don't let school get in the way of your education

THere's an implicit perception that the german brands are very reliable.

But go on those forums and you'll find that 's not the case.

A colleague at work has an X5 and it's got to go in for a recall due to risk of fire.
Getting it booked in for that has been a right palaver and they are saying they'll need the car for up to a month.

Making me feel not too bad about Land Rover Jaguar.

You mention Jaguar reliability in the title, but is it a Range Rover that you’re looking out for?

What age RR would fit in with your budget?

Both bmw engines (TD6 3.0 diesel and 4.4 V8 petrol) are generally bombproof - it’s the ancillaries that go bang. Look at the highest mileage thread on here and you will see the large number of 4.4 V8 petrols in the top 20. The engines are good to work on. It’s the radiators, gearboxes etc that need lookin after.

Hi,
My local specialist told me I had the best of the bunch in his opinion. -4.2 SC. He said they "never" have to work on those engines. (He was quite excited/pleased to see mine for a transmission oil change). The 5.0 however they work on a lot in comparison apparently. Like you, I researched the forums and made the call that there seemed to be less issues with the petrol S/C than some of the diesels. Anything's a lottery though. you pays yer money and you takes yer chance.... All you can do is look into the history and make sure they are serviced etc. Indicators of good care rather than cheap care like a quality set of matching tyres and not a no-brand chinese set are worth looking out for too. Shortcuts here mean shortcuts elsewhere in my book. I'm sure though that there are just as many reliable Diesels/BMWs out there too just to confuse matters!

Thanks mate, yes I contacted my local specialist, they said the bmw are easier to work on but come in more regular for serious issues to do with timing gains and vanos. The bmw transmissions are alone to total most of the cars outside his shop,. The jags are more reliable supposedly but come with more variety of issues and the timing chains as well, he rekens the pick of the bunch is the v6td or the v8td. Since my budget will allow for a later model sport or l322 I’ll be looking for a diesel I think at this stage but I’m not so sure yet haha Don't let school get in the way of your education

It’s true the chain guides do become brittle and can break due to the heat from the engine (especially if you have lpg apparently although some on here dispute that)

I have to replace my guides at 169,000 miles and it’s cost nearly £3k in total. The vanos were recommended to be changed but have never had any probs beforehand or after guide changes. It was another £900 for the vanos replacement
