Revs drops to nearly zero?

Another thing bugging me with my RR and thought i'd ask here in case anyone has experienced similar. Have tried searching but not bringing much up.

When in P or N, if I rev the engine slightly the revs drop right down before steadying at normal idle. A couple of times they have dropped so low then engine cut out. I also get this under braking, say when coming to a stop at a junction with the pedal pressed. Luckily it has never cut out in this instance though.

Any ideas before I start pulling things apart? Vacuum leak or MAF issue maybe?

Its an 06 AJ 4.4 V8 by the way.

Cheers all for the above advice. Back in the UK now for a month so have the time to look at things properly now.

I fitted a new MAF sensor today but still have the same symptoms.

Any other ideas? Vacuum leak maybe? 2006 Vogue 4.4 AJV8

Will check air filter and intake tomorrow. Will be giving it a full service soon so will stick a new fuel filter in and check pump and injectors also.

It's not the end of the world like, just don't like the revs dropping so low that it nearly stalls. Would hate for it to cut out coming up to a junction or whatever. 2006 Vogue 4.4 AJV8

I don't know the engine but that sort of behaviour is typical of a sticky idle control valve.

Edit: No idle control valve, just electric throttle so not likely to be sticking.

Have you figured out a cause and solution for the rpm drop?

Nope, I'm back at work for a month so haven't had a chance yet.

When I get home end of March it'll be getting a post winter service and a few other wee jobs so will look at it then and see if I can figure out what's up. 2006 Vogue 4.4 AJV8

I have had exactly the same problem with the revs nearly dropping to zero, as well as the car stalling on start up when when the engine was warm. It turned out that my vacuum system wasn't connected correctly and air was being sucked straight into the inlet manifold through the PCV valve.

If you've got the AJ-V8 then this may be of no use, but on the BMW M62 there are 2 small connections on the PCV valve (indicated by the yellow arrows below)

Normally these should be both blanked off. If fitted with LPG, then the vacuum connection to the LPG system (after the vapouriser) should be plugged on to the left hand one. If it's an early vehicle (2002/3?) then the right hand one will be connected to the SAI as per the RAVE.

Mine now seems to be running normally and as an added bonus I haven't seen the Lambda control adaption fault bank 1/2 fault codes since I reconnected the LPG pipe that had come off. David

Mine is the AJ V8 but I'll be taking a good look at the vacuum system anyways. 2006 Vogue 4.4 AJV8

Hi, bit of a late response but I had this issue on my M62 4.4 v8 and it was MAF and diaphram had split inside the crankcase breather on back of air intake manifold. Had to replace both and all was good after that.

Had same issue. Turned out the MAF and throttle body were both dirty.
