L405 sdv8 4.4l oil leak

Hi all, so looking at buying a 2013 autobiography for what is a v good price. However it has oil evident from underneath the vehicle. Appreciating it's impossible to tell what might be causing, I'm hoping that someone may look at this and have had similar and can share what their cause was / cost to repair.

The 4.4 can be a bit leaky.

There are a few possibles ranging from cheap to expensive.

Suggest you get it in somewhere for inspection, then get a quote and go back to seller with your size nines on and bid him allowing for possible cost of fix.

. Cheers, Greg

Thanks. As I've already negotiated a very decent deal, my plan is to go ahead and hope for the best. But was curious if you had any ideas based upon experience?

I have an oil leak on my 4.4 SDV8 on the seal between the engine and gearbox (it wasn't there 3 weeks ago) . I have done 55k miles in the car which is 5.5yrs old and to replace the seal involves removing the gearbox and so the main dealer cheapest quote for me is £1,100 so going ahead as I don't want to risk any form of engine failure due to lack of oil as that would make this seal change cost insignificant. Steve

Oh no sorry to hear that. I'm just confused a) why these cars are so popular and b) why, after all this time, land rover cannot make a reliable vehicle. That said, it isn't stopping me buying one...

Is it certain that the oil is leaking from the rear seal rather than running down from the top at the back of the V from a leaking oil cooler?

It could simply be the oil filter and it’s seal that isn’t fitted correctly - located upside down on top of engine. I had this on a 12 month old L322 4.4 TDV8 which is essentially the same engine.

It made a mess and wasted my time getting it into another MD to be fixed, because an inept mechanic didn’t check or complete his work correctly. I billed them for my time and they paid - but did offer a free service as an alternative. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Interesting you should say that as there was no apparent leak when it was in 3 weeks ago - for an oil change!! I'll have them check the filter - thanks Steve

I invested £5 buying a 36mm socket, because it is the best way to be sure the filter is refitted to the correct torque.

Just a quick update as according to the dealer who says it has been in to a specialist to have the oil leak investigated it is "slight misting from the turbo". I've been told (by the dealer) that it is fine for now and that in any case a failure to the turbo would be covered by the warranty. Any thoughts? Sound reasonable?

Tell them to fix it.
Leaks get worse.
He's taking the Censored telling you it's nothing to worry about.
There's plenty other cars out there leak free.

My 322 TDV8 (substantially the same engine and turbos) had a misting oil leak on one of the turbos. Dealer advice was that it was not bad enough to warrant intervention and that it should just be monitored. It was fine for the rest of the time I had the car and did not seem to get worse.

But "misting" is not going to cause visible oil at the bottom of the engine like your picture shows. So there may well be turbo misting on your car (I believe it is not uncommon, maybe associated with pre-turbo drain mod cars which would include 2013 MY?) but it should not be the cause of the leak you show. Suggest more investigation. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Thanks all. Dealer has agreed, as condition of sale, to allow me to get oil leak investigated at my expense and for them to rectify at their expense. I think that's pretty reasonable so will get a RR specialist to investigate! Will let you know the outcome in case you come across it!
