Air suspension explosion after working on car

Hi all,

Not having much luck with my 2nd L322.

Had the n/s front up on an axle stand since Friday night replacing the cv joint.

The height sensor has been off and carefully folded back towards the diff for over 24 hours.

Upon reassembly the ride height was all messed up with the in car graphic flashing a red curser at the top of the n/s wheel.

I left the car running doing its thing and there was an almighty bang as the n/s airbag blew out.

I can only assume the height sensor has gone wonky and the system kept pressuring the bag to gain height?

My question is can airbags be replaced seperate to the shock on my adaptive dynamics equipped ca (off to google)

And how the hell do i prevent it doing this again on reassembly?!

Did you disconnect the battery before removing parts ! When you do that the sensors should be fine when reconnected. Then reconnect the battery last. Just changed my struts last week and the car levelled itself fine.
Yes you can buy just the bag although it is recommended to change them in pairs. 2007 Vogue TDV8 in Zermatt Silver with Charcoal

The airbag might just have got to that time of its life.

Don't just replace the airbag, the OEM parts (by BWI) are available on eBay for £212 and changing the whole assembly makes it a really straight forward job.

Whereabouts in Cheshire are you? If you're not too far I could show you. Current:

If the shock absorber is OK I would just replace the bag, dead easy, only the one top nut to undo, thge bag just slides on with the new O rings etc (all in the kit). Island 4x4 £150 for the bag. BMW i3 Electric Car

Note that those struts are not replacements for CVDs such as fitted to the 4.4 TDV8 and some earlier vehicles.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Ive just finished fitting a new genuine LR airbag (£214 delivered from rimmer bros with a little haggling)

Its the same part no (LR051702) for both non CVD and CVD dampers.

Car exhibited similar behaviour as before with the in car graphic showing the nsf wheel as being stuck in the arch.

Took a step back and thought about it for a moment... lets compare the height sensors side to side!

Bingo! I had refitted the nsf heigh sensor wrong. The pivot point in the arm facing inwards towards the diff whereas it should face outwards towards yourself.

A quick switch around and we are back in business. Just the tracking to be done now.

How did you find the process of swapping the bags over? I thought it was a lot easier than expected. BMW i3 Electric Car

Not too bad in all honestly. The hardest part was getting the new airbag seated over the Orange and Black seals/spacers. A bit of lubrication and some twisting pushing got it on in the end.

I have a question for you GraemeS if I may?

Ive read one of your threads (or one you replied too) with regards to calibrating the CVD dampers.

Is there a way to cheese the calibration as such that the shocks become softer?

I am finding the CVDs a bit too firm compared to my previous non CVD L322.
