5.0 Supercharged normal engine sound

Does anyone know of any videos of a 5.0 supercharged engine at idle. Trying to get a reference to know what one sounds like that isn’t suffering from timing chain guide or supercharger issues.

I found a video of a Jag 5.0 supercharged and it seems to tick more than I’d have expected so would be useful to know if that’s normal.

Below are a couple of audio clips of my engine which varies - sometimes more of a rattle sometimes just a tick.

Many thanks

I'm also interested. I have a 2011 5.0 supercharged that sounds just like yours.

I have had on my former 5.0 SC the above problem with the timing chain - was expensive to repair. All my spelling errorz are belong to me!

Hi, thanks for your replies. XxxAngelxxx would you say it sounded quite different after the repair? Also how much did it cost and which garage did you have it done by? I haven’t been able to find much information on this work being done in the U.K.

I’ve finally found a video of a Supercharged ‘normal’ engine startup/idle. The more I read about this the more I think what I’m hearing is normal direct injection engine noise. I’ve not owned a direct injection engines car before so expected the V8 to be super smooth and rumbly alas that doesn’t seem to be the case for these engines.

That's really useful as that is what mine sounds like. I'm just approaching 80k miles on mine and been reading about the timing chain issues ever since I bought the car and wondered. Shame there isn't any easy what to tell if your car has the fix or not.

The dealer I bought from couldn't confirm one way or another whether mine had had the mod to fix the issue done but the car apart from that seemed sound. I've owned it for one year now and all so far seems good. Thinking about taking it to see Cam Tech Craig at some point soon for a good service and diff and gear box oil change.

This video helps reduce the timing chain worries. ----------- Current Garage --------------------

Mine sounds just the same but I’m still concerned about the timing chain.. If you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem!!

I have the 5.0 with 92k miles mines l405 same engine same everything.

The first video you posted sounds like the timing chain noise. Its that diesel tick, also rev your engine if the ticking goes up with it, there you have it.

The second video you posted is normal.

The third video that was posted was way too short to really notice much.

Post some more so we can tell. Also this noise timing noise is always present, no matter cold or warm.

I do oil change every 3k-4k.

My 5.0 has another common noise. This is a knocking noise that only happens after a WARM START. Say its exhaust related or some pump thats deep in the motor. Never when car is cold, only after car warmed up or driven and you turn it on again. The dealer i went to had 3-4 cars do this. I research this noise often on the forums in the jag forums and LR/RR forums also deemed normal, any of you guys have it? My camera amplified the noise but its a knocking. This knocking goes away after you rev the car a little bit.

This noise I have had for over 40k miles now. Many years. Never gotten worse, never better.

BACKFIRE is normal guys the car has the SVR tune so dont worry about tuat

More videos of the same noise on other 5.0 jag

this guy says this is a time chain knock. it seems the asme knock we hearing but much louder
