Vitrectomy any body ?

Facing a Vitrectomy next week. Any one under gone this procedure ? Its not for retinal tear but to remove the contaminated gel in my eye which has become cloudy due to a recent bleed following a retinal tear procedure last October. Did it work ?

I had one done in 2014 following the contamination of the fluid due to floaters, debris etc.

It was painless even though the sight of someone about to stick a needle into your eye is a bit weird but it’s usually all over in 15 to 20 minutes. I had to have all of the vitreous removed and they do tell you that there is a 80 to 90% chance you will develop a cataract in the effected eye in about 1 to 2 years, I did after 1 year and the resulting operation was also quick and painless but it did remove all of the rubbish in there and I haven’t had any since.

Cheers ______________________________

Thanks for that. The surgeon has told me that because the gas bubble they use speeds up cataracts by about 50%, he does a cataract op at the same time to avoid having to come back. My fluid is so messed up I cant see anything. Is the vision in your affected eye satisfactory . ? My other eye is fine but I dont really want to drive with just one eye.

The vitrectomy was fine but my vision was blurry after the op and I had to start wearing glasses, it was the cataract op that screwed up my vision completely but that was down to the surgeon not checking and not listening when I told him that I had been taking steroids for years for aggressive polyp growths and was susceptible to bruising etc.

On day two post cataract op my sight looked like an oil painting smeared across from one side to the other. Day three I had lost the left field of view completely and subsequently I only have a very small field of view on the right side and in grey scale. I had developed a macular oedema which is a swelling of the macula behind the retina, I complained to the surgeon and when he looked through the hand held device they use he said he couldn’t see anything and that I was being hysterical. Now I’m ex Royal Marine and believe me I don’t do hysterical and if I could have seen him it would have been good for him being so close to A+E. We left that hospital and went to a specialised eye A+E hospital in Sunderland and they put me in a scanner and immediately diagnosed the oedema, they rang my surgeon to get permission to treat me and he refused saying he was my doctor and he would treat me, they told him it had to be immediately and he made an appointment for six weeks later. Their hands were tied and I lost my sight in that eye.

Now that’s my story but yours will be completely different and you will see the benefits - pun intended... Very Happy ______________________________

I had it over 4 years ago as part of a detached retina op, whilst not fun it is no great shakes. Cataract developed and done 18 months later.
After the op was unwilling to drive for about a month as the gas bubble sorted itself out, you cant fly for a month or so as well.
Relatively straight forward but the benefit to quality of life is huge, makes one realise that these surgeons are gods and are treated like Censored by the NHS. letters not necessarily in the right order

Not my surgeon but then they aren’t all the same - the twist in this story is that I was a senior NHS Manager for the hospital where it happened. Because I have a problem with my other eye caused by shrapnel damage received while on deployment overseas I am effectively blind and had to retire from the NHS. I don’t drive now my wife does but I do fix the Range Rover to the best of my abilities. Contributing to this forum is done via my wife and voice to text which can be entertaining as it doesn’t like my northeastern accent Laughing ______________________________

Sorry story , what a Censored wit Filters are in fact so good that in certain circumstances, when the ambient air is already polluted, a diesel car will tend to extract more particles from the air than it emits. Emissions Analytics worked with........etc etc

It is and he is, but it’s not what happens to us that defines us it’s how we deal with it and I’m coping well, because I like 95% of other blind people have some usable sight.

I miss driving and I hate it so much that I had to sell my motorbikes, you feel so constrained helpless even but as time goes by you get used to it. Smile ______________________________

We are everywhere and we are part of a proud and very old regiment. I followed my dad and grandad in, in fact some of my instructors knew my dad. Every day they would “see” if I was as good as he was, but little did they or me know that he was preparing me from a very early age....it only became apparent a quarter of the way in Thumbs Up ______________________________

Just to keep you in the loop. After a 2 and half hour operation lasy Friday ,a detached retina has been discovered and reattached. It’s now a case of not being able to move for at least 2 weeks as a gas has been put in to my eye. They have also done the cataract as the gas will bring on the onset of one. The skill of the surgeon involved is beyond comprehension. Been several weeks now before we know if it has been successful.

As the bubble reduces you will get some vision back above it, that will slowly get bigger from the top down as if you are looking over a wall, I felt so stupid when I found myself going on to tip toes to see over it.
Are you forced to only lie on one side in bed.
I am totally with you about the surgeons being gods, the fact that they are paid in a year less than a footbalist gets in a week shoes what a mad world we inhabit. letters not necessarily in the right order
