Just wondering has anyone really made any use of the four cigarette lighters that are in the FFRR apart from lighting cigarettes if so for what use

2 are lighters and 2 are 12v accessory sockets and are not interchangeable ie you shouldnt put an accessory in the lighter socket and the lighters dont work in the accessory sockets.

But in answer to your question:

Phone charger in the cubby box.
Fridge/Laptop/Battery Booster in the boot point.

whats wrong with putting a satnav/phone charger/etc into the front center console lighter socket?


it actually says in the manual
'DO NOT plug accessories into the cigar
lighter socket unless they are approved by
Land Rover.'

Indeed. Only logical reason is the loading on the cable. I.e. If you try to run a power hungy fridge in the passenger front foot well from the front. From Dans recent post it appears the feed to the sockets runs all the way to the back of the car.. then back to the front... which is absurd from a design point of view and given the losses in the cable.

The new cars have a non smokers (no cost) option. I guess this removes all the ash trays and cig lighting part of the sockets. Should be like that as standard IMO. FFRR TD6 HSE

My phone charger doesn't seem to work from the socket next to gear stick but works fine from on on cubby box. It might be bust or might be something about the power output. FFRR TD6 HSE

Of course you can plug whatever you want into whatever hole you choose, no one is holding a gun to your head to tell you otherwise. Land Rover do have several words of caution in the WSM manual though that I'm sure are not just there for fun.

For the sake of using the correct socket, why would you risk thousands of pounds worth of potential electrical damage? Again, do whatever you want. Personally I will ensure that I charge my phone from the accessory socket and plug in any other accessories into the accessory sockets. If I need to torture a hoodie to get my Breitling back I will use the Cigar lighter!

In terms of load rating, the front 3 sockets are fused 20A between the 3 of them. This of course doesnt mean they have 20A cable to each one, I don't know what they use.

The rear socket has a dedicated 20A fuse so should be rated completely to 20A.

CIGAR LIGHTERS

DESCRIPTION

General
Two cigar lighters are fitted to Range Rover. The front cigar lighter is located in the front of
the centre console for use by the driver and front passenger. The rear cigar lighter is located
in the rear of the centre console for use by the rear seat passengers.
When the cigar lighter element is pushed into the cigar lighter, power is automatically
switched through its locking clips to the heater coil. As current passes through the heater
coil, the element will heat up to the point where the locking clips expand and release the
cigar lighter element.

CAUTION: The cigar lighter should NOT be used for accessory power or damage may
result.

OPERATION

Power Distribution
Feed from the positive battery terminal (C0192) is supplied to fusible link 1 of the passenger
compartment fuse box (C0632) on an R wire. Fusible link 1 (C0588) is connected to fuse 1
of the rear fuse box (C2024) on an R wire.

Front Cigar Lighter
Fuse 1 of the rear fuse box (C2020) provides a constant battery feed to the front cigar lighter
(C0089) on an RBY wire. When the cigar lighter element is pushed into the cigar lighter, an
earth path is created (C0086) on an N wire. When the element reaches the correct
temperature and is ejected, the circuit is broken.

Rear Cigar Lighter
Fuse 1 of the rear fuse box (C2020) provides a constant battery feed to the rear cigar lighter
(C1594) on an RG wire. When the cigar lighter element is pushed into the cigar lighter, an
earth path is created (C1595) on an N wire. When the element reaches the correct
temperature and is ejected, the circuit is broken.

DESCRIPTION

General
Two accessory sockets are fitted to Range Rover. The front accessory socket is located in
the storage compartment at the rear of the centre console. The rear accessory socket is
located on the RH side of the luggage compartment, behind a protective cover.
Both accessory sockets provide battery voltage to any approved Land Rover accessory.

CAUTION: The cigar lighter should NOT be used for accessory power or damage may
result.

OPERATION

Power Distribution
Feed from the positive battery terminal (C0192) is supplied to fusible link 1 (C0632) of the

Which ones are live when the ignition is off. Been thinking about a solar charger to keep the battery tiptop. Would the rear one work?

Would it stop the car going to sleep?

There is an easy perm live behind the RH pannel in the boot. Might be worth looking at that as an option as it goes direct to the battery.
