Hi all had my heart set on a 4.2 with updated interior but struggling to find everything I want. I have now found a 4.4 ajv8 but know nothing about this engine it seems like a ghost! Most importantly how does it sound compared to the s/c and Bmw v8? Fuel wise is it much better than the s/c? Anything to watch out for? Current stable:

The jag 4.4 is a good engine but not so good for lpg. I would go for the 4.2 SC for its thrills and good reputation for resilience.

Fuel wise the 4.2 is thirstier - my 4.4 gets c. 20 ish mpg but with lpg gets nearer 30. An SC will prob give up to 18-20 depending on driving style.

Is your 4.4 on LPG though? I think I am going to go with the 4.2 on lpg. After a lot of research the main problems seem to be running off a single hole tank (so it runs lean) and things get too hot and people don’t use valve saver. Both of which I will do. I also will get it converted myself so hoping I should get many miles before lpg issues! Current stable:

I owned a 4.4 AJV8 for 18 mths - superb, 300bhp with decent economy. Only problem I had was a MAF unit costing £150.

The engine was (probably) the most common in the L322 of that era & known as the ROW (Rest Of the World) motor, but is rare here. It's an unsung hero in my eyes.

I used to get 18 ish mpg with upto 23 mpg on a run - try that in an S/C ! Plus, there are lower tax bracket cars out there . . .

My only observation is it's not what you'd perhaps expect in terms of torque delivery, being available higher up the rev range. That being said, for hilly areas just using the gearbox in manual more it was fine which I preferred anyway.

 Where do you go after one of these . . . ?

I've got a 4.2 sc on lpg with valve saver and get 13.5 mpg with just normal running around. I'm not really heavy on the throttle either. 2007 sc

I'm not sure there's vast mpg differences between the various petrol engines, especially the 4.2 and 5.0 S/C - the real impact is how and where you drive them?

I average 22-23mpg in my 5.0 S/C with a mix of crossing right through central London and then doing the motorways down to Dorset. If I just drive round Central London in stop/start traffic, it plummets to 10-12 mpg, or if I just drive down a motorway with the cruise on ~70mph I've seen it nudge up to 25-26mpg.

So not really sure the 4.4 AJV8 engine is that much more efficient to be honest, although with any S/C RR, if you are worried about the fuel, then it's the wrong vehicle to buy!

Yes, avoid stop start traffic like the plague in an SC. For comparison, we previously had the 4.4 BMW engine and the MPG compared to our 4.2 is the same. Not a direct comparison to the AJ4.4 but I would be surprised if the difference was noticeable.

Great advise guys - I’ve had the 4.4 bmw for 3 yrs on lpg and happy(ish) with those fuel bills so if I go 4.2 on lpg it will be there or there about a and 4.4aj marginally better? Current stable:

Sounds about right, but don't forget the 4.2 is super charged, so I'm guessing that at least initially your MPG won't be anywhere near the normally aspirated

Yea tbh my wife drives the more local trips in it during the week so the s/c will barely be used and I use just on long runs so hoping it will bed In Current stable:

What a joke and waste of time if anyone else thinks it’s a good deal it’s not. On the phone said it was all fine.

Got there cold start misfiring consistently at idle - tried to say because there wasn’t much petrol so i revved it and it’s fine higher up the range and he then said it sounds like it just needs a coil pack... then eml was on too I left it as it stank of vsr issues. It would potentially be a good buy if you could knock them down if you did the heads yourself as the underneath by some miracle had next to no rot!

The car was the polar opposite of the others I’ve seen - rot but good drive train. Btw I appreciate it was cheap and my budget is a fair bit higher but as I was in the area I thought I’d look! Current stable:

It is pretty cheap though, but if the ad was honest it could've saved you a trip! (or at least given you an idea of what was needed before you went to look at it)
