Front end droning noise

Hi, I'm after some advise please, tdv8 has, developed a reasonably loud droning noise which is steadily getting worse, it seems to get louder with increase in speed, it sounds like I have an aircraft flying above me and defiantly worsens taking left hand bends/curves there is also a tingle/vibration felt thru the steering wheel all the time. I've tried coasting downhill in neutral and its still there, I'm thinking wheel bearings, or driveshaft cv joints, or could tyres be the culprit? Fronts have about 4mm remaining. Some pointers would be really helpful, thanks. Bow down 2008 L322 Vogue 3.6 TDV8 in Java Black with parchment and Navy interior. 125000mls.

Thanks, Do I buy a new wheel bearing off ebay for £40-50 that I assume will require pressing in after Question the old one pressed out or can I buy a new hub assembly to swap out? 2008 L322 Vogue 3.6 TDV8 in Java Black with parchment and Navy interior. 125000mls.

Out of interest, and sorry to hijack the thread. If I’m driving and put it into neutral can I just put it back into drive while I’m still going? Or do I need to stop the car first?

Yes. Why do you want to?

Don't try to put it in reverse. Shocked

@OP, As others have said may be a wheel bearing. However, have you looked around the front underside for any loose attachments?

Possible for something to be vibrating in the wind of forward motion "thrumming" which would also transmit through the vehicle.

Just a thought before going for a more expensive option. John

I had a similar thing on an old car and it turned out to be the engine tray being loose. The remaining clips kept it in place until I got to about 60 then it would fold down and make a constant buffering sound and feel.

As the going into neutral then back out, that’s accidental. I just got up to motorway speed and was due to stay on for a long time. I’ve got into a habit of putting the car into manual and into 6th gear to stop it changing down when I accelerate. I hadn’t knocked the stick over to the left this time so instead of going up a gear it went into neutral. I wasn’t sure if I could just put it back into drive so I pulled into a lay-by to do it when the car stopped. Luckily there was nothing around as this was through the night.

I have a strange noise as well. It makes a dull thump thump noise when I pull away and speeds up the faster I go. The frequency between thumps is consistent with the outside diameter of the tyre hitting the road surface. In other words it’s not a fast thump which would come from a rapidly spinning driveshaft or bearing/hub. 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

Andy I think you'll find your driveshafts and hub bearings turn at the same rate as your tyres/wheels? Previously a 2008MY Tonga Green Vogue SE 3.6 TDV8

Yes I know that!

This sound is more in time with say a section of tyre hitting the floor. Hard to describe really but there is a very slight delay between each “whoop”. Anything closer to the hub would be more frequent if that makes sense 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

IF as in my case the drones tone varies according to road speed and worsens/gets louder when the steering wheel is turned left, so I deduce the noise origin is either, wheel bearing, cv drive shaft joint wear, tyre problem, diff problem, brake caliper /disc/pad rubbing or catching as ALL these revolve in direct proportion to road speed, I'm inclined to think its the bearings but they need pressing out and new pressed in unless I obtain a complete hub off a scrapper for a more straightforward swap over, the noise is getting quite intrusive now with tingle /vibration through the steering wheel.
