The Honest John figures are inaccurate - it lists the TDV8 as doing 33 mpg - this engine was only ever fitted to the 322 - and the SDV8 as doing 27.5. The L405 has only ever had the SDV8 fitted and those figures seem to be the wrong way round in any event as the SDV8 gives more mpg in the L405 than the L322 due to weight savings, engine change, management, gearing and other improvements.

Here’s the genuine mpg figure for my SDV8 L405 over the last 40,000 odd miles:

It’s hardly ever stuck in traffic and usually driven gently, although hilly road and country land driving never do it any favours. I think 27.5 mpg is probably fair in flatter parts of the country. I have no idea how people report figures in the high 30’s, unless it’s for brief periods only and then via the lieometer.

I’m still happy with this figure, considering the car. It’s not even a whole mpg worse than my old SDV6 was in my last Disco 4.

I'm glad you posted that figure as I was worried my style of driving was worse than everyone else's as I only seem to register around 26-27mpg no matter how gently or hard I drive. I do mainly short 8-9 mile trips commuting but then I can then often do 300+ mile jaunts so swings and roundabouts as they say. I have almost 13k miles in 11 months so well run in by now.
My 3.0 was a few miles better at around the 30mpg but my 5.0sc was late teens to early 20's Big Cry

These are all pretty fair figures, considering what these cars are.

If it makes you feel better, my late FiL’s Bristol used to return 9mpg and that was before hitching their huge caravan! Shocked Rolling Eyes Laughing

Nubbin said it all - I’m an sdv8 man. If I were a buyer this year I would buy sdv8 diesel again.

I enjoyed the term “liometer” from Red M , last year I spent the first two weeks of ownership calculating my mpg v the liometer, then said “ Censored it. “ . Using the liometer I get 29 ish normally.

Euro6 petrol or diesel is euro 6 period.
If diesel is banned on odd streets in odd cities, eg Hamburg then I’ll take a train or not go. Filters are in fact so good that in certain circumstances, when the ambient air is already polluted, a diesel car will tend to extract more particles from the air than it emits. Emissions Analytics worked with........etc etc

The first Fatty that I test drove was the TDV6. I’d been used to driving an SDV6 Disco 4. Driving off the dealer’s industrial estate was fine but, as soon as I got up to about 40-50mph on the dual carriageway and slowed to turn left on the big roundabout on the Saltash bypass, the bodyroll came as a shock. It’s something you’d probably get used to and drive around, given time, but it wasn’t something I’d wanted to have to have to get used to. It also had a bit of a flat spot at the bottom of the rev range that produced a short pause and a down change when pulling out of a junction into traffic. The SDV6 in the (much heavier) D4 hadn’t been affected by either of these things.

I took the SDV8 out straight away afterwards and it had neither problem. I knew that it was right for me as soon as I pulled out of the parking space on the dealer’s forecourt.

It’s a shame really, as I’d really have benefitted from the better economy of the V6 (driving around 3,000 miles a month) and I don’t need to extra power of the V8, but the power delivery is superb for smooth driving and with the V8 not having suffered from crankshaft failures, I’m happy that the extra costs are justified Thumbs Up

The only time that I’ve driven the 5.0 SC was in a F-Type and that doesn’t really count. Loads of fun though!! Very Happy

Fuel economy is a big part of this thread so I wanted to ask if anyone has a fairly accurate method of working this out. Full-to-full and miles travelled gives an indication but considering speedo inaccuracies and tyre wear affecting rolling diameter etc. we have no way to know how accurate this is.

I’d say that a 40,000 + mile, brim-to-brim, test is about as accurate as we can reasonably get Thumbs Up

Brim to brim testing on the TDV6 D5 loaner that I had for a a few weeks, driven under ecactly the same conditions, gave 28.58mpg vs 25.80 on the SDV8 FF. Okay, the FF TDV6 is going to be better (slightly less weight, better aerodynamics, much less ugly Rolling Eyes ), but not by very much.

Although I've only done 760 miles, 25mpg seems about right for me and that's quite a few short trips to the shops etc. I managed 31.9mpg on a run, then did the exact same run the next week and got 24.6! Huh?

I frequently do 600 - 800 mile round trip motorway journeys over 1 or 2 days and real world average mpg can be up to 34 mpg, driving carefully, and depending on traffic, stop starts, average speed etc. Overall my mpg for local trips and motorway journeys is around 28/29 mpg. Worked out brim to brim, gallons used against miles travelled.

If you get caught up in free flowing steady traffic at 65/70 mph the mpg soon goes up. The V8 diesel is only ticking over in 8th - at 50 mph she is only doing 1000 rpm. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Quite happy these days since the oil regeneration software upgrade was completed in November, it had no effect on the displayed average MPG that I have had with the TDV6 since purchase in Nov 2017. Wish I had the V8 Diesel but I never want for acceleration in my own daily driving.

 Journey started in a LR2B at 16 and has incl. just about every Land Rover, Disco, RRS and Range Rover Vehicle owned or driven, I even worked for the company when it was owned by BAe - It must be a madness!!! because to add to my 4.4 TDV8 Westminister In Baltic Blue I bought a second L322 as a commuter bus, TD6 2004 Vogue in Oslo Blue with cream leather now both gone replaced with what could turn out to be my biggest mistake.
