To be honest the 3.6 TDV8 isn’t brilliant around town either, so I think the slightly lower mpg and the slightly lower price of petrol might well even itself out. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

On the M-way it's in a league of it's own - high 30's but around town the 4.4 diesel is only 17-19mpg

ok back to DPF stuff:

Following a failed attempt yesterday to replace what I believe to be to root of my DPF problems, the EGR Sensor A in the NS exhaust manifold, we had a good run from London to Birmingham up the M40 today.

Soot level around 13g as we set off, I'm monitoring the journey with the IIDTool set up on the dash mount showing my DPF relevant values; exhaust temps, DPF soot level, rpm etc.

I watched the soot climb, 14g, then 15 g, and onto 16g in the space of an hour. Told you it's filling up too quickly. Exhaust temps so far normal.

Rain and spray meant visibility was poor and people started putting their rear fog lights on. Weirdly plenty of people didn't pu any lights at all. Don't understand that.

Anyway, I was waiting for a passive regen as we cruised along effortlessly at 70, the auto wipers deciding high speed was needed, while my wife and daughter watched a film in luxury in the rear cabin with the epic heat/cooled electric rear seats. I've got a centrally mounted iPad for the rear passengers and it's a lot better IMO then the headrest RSE Cool Meanwhile, up front in the cockpit, the IID shows the soot keeps climbing and as soon it hit 17g, a DPF regen is started automatically by the ECU; exhaust temps magically rose up, steadily past 500 degrees and on to over 600deg while the soot level dropped, and dropped and dropped, bottoming out at 2.2g. Super low! Thumbs Up

A satisfying feeling, might last me a week or two at best before I'll be up at 17 again.

But now I know 17grams in the threshold level the ECU is set to commence a passive regen. Will add to the to bible section at the top.

A very interesting read.
I have owned mine for nearly 7 years and have never seen a DPF warning but mine spends most of its time at 50 to 60/towing a 2 tonne Caravan.
Never seen any sign of soot on the Caravan front so it must burn it completely.

Well that’s me had my second yellow triangle in 3 weeks , done a mixture of 600 miles towing and some short town work. Seems as though an IID should be invested in soon . Would the commonly faulty sensor log codes and is it a pig to do?

Yes the EGR sensor will show up as an error.
It might or might not be the sensor though.

Yes you should invest in an IID.

In the meantime take it on a 50mph run for 30 mins.

Unfortunately you can't really monitor the spot level without an IID.
Maybe towing prohibits regen on the ECU.

Back to the sensor, on my EGR sensor write up another chap added how to do it on 405.
Will post a link later.

I know Stan & others think I have lost my marbles Rolling with laughter , but it is very satisfying and the only way to really know what is happening, leave your iid plugged in and monitor live values for DPF soot mass and exhaust temperature. whilst doing 50/60 mph for 20/30 minutes.
If the soot mass gets over 17.5g (but less than 23.5g to trigger the alarm) you will see a rapid increase in temperature to over 620c and the soot level will be in single figures ( typically 1.5g) as the Active Regen is completed, then you will be able to leave it for a few weeks.😁😁

If the regen should take 30 mins, and I only manage say 20 mins before hitting a traffic light or similar, do I have to start all over again?


I had an engine management light on yellow the other day, may be connnected. Throttle body stuck, shutter didn’t spring back, engineer had one in the van! Well sooted up. (LR020694)
He carried out power train controls module to correct level. Some sort of update hadn’t been done before.

Bill Filters are in fact so good that in certain circumstances, when the ambient air is already polluted, a diesel car will tend to extract more particles from the air than it emits. Emissions Analytics worked with........etc etc

I do mainly town driving but every week I do a steady 30 mile drive sitting at 70, 50 and 40 mph as I go to Leigh on sea every week with my mates for a pint. It seems to clear out any build up that occurs. I did once have a warning in my D4 but never saw it again. I think there were rumours that if they needed replacing the cost was £2k+ so I didn't tell the wife.
