Annual cost per mile..... or when is a hobby a millstone

I've just had my Defender MOT'd, it passed with flying colours but has prompted a re-appraisal of just when does a hobby stop being a hobby and become a financial millstone...............

My 90 is now 15 years old and in the last 12 months has done exactly 1601 miles between MOT's, about 1000 of those miles have been offroad. Now adding up ALL the costs (including accommodation and entrance fees) the cost per mile is in excess of £11! OK so I could buy a tintent or even sleep under canvas but that doesn't really hack it for me, I like miy creature comforts whe I go away for the weekend. In the next year it will require same major engine routine open heart surgery on the engine (cambelt change) this is on elapsed time not on miles covered - LR recommend every 7 years or 72000 miles and mine has covered just over 10k miles since the first change at 7 years/61000 miles. So in the cold light of day when does one say that this hobby is getting a tad expensive? I love my Defender, I probably lavish more money (I can afford to) on it than most, I don't smoke, I drink little, I don't have sebveral expensive holidays a year (I get paid to go to the sunshine instead!) and I don't have to supply endless expensive handbags to a SWMBO...................

I suppose I could sell both cars and by a used D3/D4 that could do what both cars can do, except it cannot get through the narrow gaps between the trees in the forests I visit without loosing most of it's side panels! 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes

Tim, its your money, its your hobby - you don't have to justify it - as long as the family isn't going without Wink

Others spend thousands on golf club membership, yachts or season tickets. If you enjoy it and can afford it then do it Cool

Stange you should mention this Scarey..................... there are 4 forests for sale in my area BUT I don't know if it is just the timber or the timber and the land that is being sold. Having a private off-road play-ground site would be nice but they tend to be more expensive to buy and run than the 90 is! 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes

Tboner, if I sold the Defender I would be able to put the RR in the same place as I store the 90 when I'm away, if the owner of the shed (my father) would hurry up and sell his huge motor home (he's been talking about it for the last 2 years as he's getting too old to drive it) then I would be able to get at least 3 FFRR's into the empty slot left by it! 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes

Yeh, scarey, but Bambi doesn't know what's heading toward them whereas with a 4x4 they get the noise of a fleet of tractors coming in their direction......... so it's unfair sport giving them warning 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes
