L322 2005 rear hatch seal replacement - sealant or not ?

I've removed the original boot/rear hatch aperture seal on my L322 ready to put the new one in and noticed there are traces of white/grey sealant (not silicone, its more like seam sealer or putty) on the metal and in the seal. Is that how the factory fitted them or is it likely to have been a previous attempt to stop a leak ? More importantly is it best to fit the new seal with or without sealant, and if yes, which one ?

Thanks Thumbs Up
