L322 4.2 SC search - Having a wobble about cost!

I've been searching and searching - and no real luck with finding an MY07 onwards 4.2SC.

Now, I've probably read too much and my head is starting to overrule my heart!! (It's a strange feeling, I don't like it Laughing )

So - how much is this going to cost me? Not initial purchase price but ongoing? I barely do 4k miles a year hence not worried about economy (I've had a 5L V8 TVR and didn't worry then). What about the rest, realistically?

Ahh, you have made the mistake of believing all is bad... we only post like a bunch of old misery bastards, in actual fact it is a pleasurable experience with no more expense than any other high value vehicle, buy the best serviced/maintained one you can and all will be well in the world, I can guarantee you won't regret it ( maybe a bit ) Thumbs Up

To give you an idea I have a 4.2 have had it for getting on for 5 years and done over 100k miles in it it is on 170k - it has never let me down I have replaced bits bushes brakes etc but through wear and tear - the only major cost was the front airbags and shocks and I replaced the pump as a preventative measure - also interestingly there is no rust

England 

Allow minimum £1000 per annum for servicing / parts / replacements (assumes you do the work!)
then reserve £2-3K for the big time stuff (gearbox/engine/drivetrain/ancillaries) .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

Everyone who doesn't know will try and talk you out of it. Everyone who hasn't driven one will tell you why it's a bad idea and will ruin you.

Ignore them all.

There's nothing quite like it the way it lopes down the road, so serenely when you want to just coast. And when you floor it, the nose comes up just a tiny bit, the engine growls and it picks you up in a velvet glove of torque and throws you at the horizon. When it does that, you forget the odd little bad temper tamtrum it throws now and again.

Put it this way - I've had mine a grand total of 16 days. On day 1 it broke down. On day 9 it broke down again and was off the road for 4 days. I've got it back now and no matter what, I am never ever giving up on it. They are that addictive. When it eventually dies, I'm buying another. And another. I've found my car for life.

Yeah it ain't cheap but so what? I've yet to see a coffin with pockets - you can't take it with you. 09 RR Westminster 3.6TDV8 - Stornoway Grey / Black interior - now gone (sad face)

Everything above is true - it is an epic car. Having had ours for a year now I have some hard figures you may find interesting.

We bought a fine example with 73000 miles on the clock. The cost per mile has been 82p, the cost per day is currently £23.99 and we have managed 15 miles to the gallon (this is from pump figures) - this is a combination of with and without our caravan.

Now granted, I spent a bunch on it when we got it, replacing all the bits I knew were on their way out or simply needed replacing (air compressor, tyres, sc pump, various suspension parts/bushes, battery and so on) and I still have some expensive stuff coming up. Nearly all of this has been diy (you will need a bush press set and some big tools). At garage prices I don't want to think about how much it would have cost.

But, nothing has gone wrong - totally reliable. All the work above I did as preventative (with the exception of the rear hub bushes).

My 2007 is great but I'd be straight up lying to you if I said it's an "economical" vehicle because it's not. Nothing about it is economical because that's not what it was designed to be.

Now if you want the best, most comfortable and competent SUV out there, then a L322 is a most excellent choice. You just have to be "liberal" with your maintenance budget. The worst thing you can do to a Land Rover is not maintain it. 2010 RR SC

30 months now and only replaced airbags apart from normal wear and tare items totally reliable on the key and a joy to drive.As you we only do about 5k per year and what a joy to be waffted along and that growl when you press the pedal is addictive.They are supposed to be the best engines especially if you do short journeys being petrol.Go for it mate if you are lucky with a good one you wont regret also line a good indie up.Good luck Thumbs Up

If you can get a decent warranty, do it, and if you can, get a long one (oo-er Mrs Embarassed ) And get full breakdown cover as well.

I got a 3 year warranty on mine, cost about £1500, covers absolutely everything including all the electrics, media etc. Even just for the peace of mind, totally worth it. It's started paying for itself already, I reckon I'd be down at least £200 without it and thats less than 3 weeks in

I was quite nervous buying my FF, I was getting put off by the horror stories and the costs. It only took buying the warranty to put my mind at rest.

AA cover was only £45 for the full package for the first year - home start, onward journey, the whole lot. They gave me a massive discount over the phone, and needless to say I bit their hand off at that price! I had my 07 for just over a year and 8k miles. It cost me £37 in repairs in that time. I also spent a total of £800 on servicing, most of that was for the gearbox which I did for preventative.

If truth be told I wish I hadn't bothered as it took 3 goes and another garage to stop the sump leaking. After all the effort there was no change in the gearbox performance!

However, peace of mind and all that.

By contrast I bet I'm more than £900 into fixing the old 02 4.4 I have at the moment that I've done 500 miles in mainly replacing bits that are life expired. 2005 E60 M5
