Trans Failsafe ....I KNOW I KNOW but i need help

Ok so i know this could be a billion things but please please bare with me

RR L322 2006 TD6 222000k ( im trying for 500K)
gearbox replaced at 108k
New Batt
Gearbox (GM) fluid and filter changed at LR at 200k

Diag code GEAR 2 INCORRECT RATIO

im getting Trans Failsafe Prog when i boot it hard or try incline after say 10 miles, i can clear the limp mode if i turn off and wait for the fault to clear of the dials lcd
i also notice that the Temp sits at just above 1/4 just above blue as normal and the heaters are some what pants in the winter but when i get TFP the temp is always at half way, once cleared and i drive for a few miles it goes down to the 1/4 mark again until i boot it (kickdown) or try steep incline again then temp rises .....

i have read many many posts about TFS however none i have found have the temp thing going on... so i have read that on some models they can suffer with blocked rads (bottom 8 rows or something) also the oil cooler ???? this in my mind would, with the heater temp being so low in the winter could well be the issue or am i barking up the wrong tree ????

HEEELLLPPP

Of the billion things.... Wink

1. Temperature
This sounds like your thermostats are shot
Main thermostat
EGR thermostat
Best to replace both (as you will have the latter out to get to the former!)

2. TFS
Could be blocked radiator and oil cooler....
Again easier to do both at the same time

Could be a gearbox/solenoid issue

Most of 1 and 2 can be found in the wiki .

Mine threw the same code, and it was the solenoids, if that helps

EGR blanking on a TD6 should have no impact

Look here or search the forum for solenoid / ideas

Hi

My Mechatronic unit valves and Solenoids were done by Robbs Garage 0151 638 1384, they did it in a day or so , also had the metal gearbox sump fitted and a complete oil change, 6 Speed ZF box, cant remember how much it cost but it was money well spent , give them a call on 0151 638 1384.

Cheers

I found this again in one of my posts.

Land Rover issued a Technical Service Bulletin in September 2007 for "High Engine Speeds and/or Transmission Shift Problems" which stated :

"The customer may experience high engine speeds and/or transmission shift problems after driving for 25 minutes or longer. There may also be the possibility of the transmission overheat message being displayed on the instrument cluster. High transmission fluid temperatures may be the cause of the problem"

In other words the transmission is selecting 'cooling strategy' mode as the bulk oil temperature has exceeded 140 deg. C.

The fault is caused by a partial blockage in the lower eight tubes of the (engine) radiator which supply coolant to the transmission oil cooler - supposedly caused by "depletion of the coolant corrosion inhibitor".

The bulletin states that it's not possible to clean out the partial blockage and that the radiator must be replaced.
