Headlight wipers

Popped outside last night to walk the dogs and noticed a buzzing coming from front O/S of the Range Rover. It would buzz then wait about 3 seconds and buzz again, I put my fingers on the headlight glass and couldn’t feel anything then put them on the headlight wiper arm and could feel a vibration every time it buzzed.

It was after midnight so I wasn’t going to be faffing with the car at that time so went out first thing this morning. I noticed that while the O/S wiper arm was horizontal the N/S headlight wiper arm was pointing straight up and every time it buzzed water was coming out of the jets. The arms weren’t moving at all.

I did a battery disconnect and waited a while then reconnected, the N/S arm then started wiping but not the O/S and the buzzing resumed. I started the car up and the buzzing / wiping stopped but I couldn’t instigate a headlight wipe with either arms by putting on the headlights and trying it the proper way.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to start rectifying this odd problem that only started last night.

Cheers all ______________________________

I've had that before but only on one wiper at a time and it usually meant the motor had given up. (I've gone through a few)

If the motor doesn't park properly then it leaves the circuit open and will drain the battery so worth pulling the fuse on it until you work out what to do. Does seem strange both have gone at the same time which might suggest the relay (and the buzzing) rather than the motor. The washer pump is only one on of the lights - I think the passenger side. Current Fleet:-

Thanks for the response Thumbs Up

The only thing that intrigues me is that I hadn’t used the car for about 2 weeks and I haven’t used the headlight wipers in months. I know this as I haven’t been out after dark in it for ages....so why all of a sudden spark up like this?

I have had water ingress around the battery as the rubber bonnet seal at the bottom of the windscreen finisher has decided to shorten its length for whatever reason and was wondering if the relay is behind the battery and has shorted out. ______________________________

I think the fact the wipers are parking in different places suggests the relay. The relay is located behind the passenger side dash vent (otherside of bulkhead from battery) so maybe the water ingress has gone further?

From distance hazy memory the wipers are wired inversely - so you do get a drain when the motors are playing up - which could again be why they started up if the relay got wet when you hadn't run the car. Current Fleet:-

Thanks Nick but there’s only one wiper working - the N/S one.

I’ve read somewhere that the circuit for the wipers goes through the headlight washer pump....

If you disconnect the pump and the wipers start to work again then the pump is at fault, so it’s off with the pump connector when I get a bit of time......

Sorry, somehow I thought both were playing up. My money is on the motor (had to change 1 drivers side and 2 near side in 200k) but easy to rule the pump out first. (taking the motors out is a pain if it hasn't been done before as there is a piece of metal reinforcement in the way of the bolts!)

Good luck Current Fleet:-

I’ll give it a go at the weekend to see if the pump is interfering with the motors, if not I’ll get the motors off somehow.
