New noise

When I turn off my engine there's is a high pitched wine coming from the centre front on the engine compartment. After a minute or so there is a glug sound and the noise stops suddenly. Any ideas as to what it might be and is there a problem that need attending to?

I've just got ours out and have heard the same thing. It seems to happen every time I shut the engine down, but only heard if I have the bonnet up and head near. It appears to be the throttle body making the whine and then that "glug" seems to be it finding its rest position. I have recently replaced the throttle body due to other faults coming up and the new one is still making that noise. Thus I am not concerned about it, yet.

Someone with more info should be along shortly.

Link to my thread on faults, if it helps.

Thanks for your comments. My sound seems to have become louder recently.

I favour the injectors being cleaned. The noise has always existed with mine and occurred on my 3.0 D4 too. Others thought the 3.0 noise was cleaning the EGR valves. Anyone with a stethoscope?

Mine has an extra, lower frequency noise for 15 seconds after engine switch-off these days which is due to my throttle closer keeping the butterfly shut as a runaway preventative.

Diesels dont have a throttle as such, I know theres a device that looks like a throttle body is that it's real function? My Touareg had a very similar item, in the case of the VW it was an 'anti shudder valve'. It was closed during shut down of the engine to stop a wobble, one cylinder was always going to be on compression and caused the engine to shudder when stopping. By closing the valve (throttle) the compression cylinder had no air and therefore wasnt compressing resulting in no shudder.
Could this be the case with the TDV8's? BMW i3 Electric Car

It is a throttle and is used to close-off fresh air to cause more recirculated air through the EGR valve.

Interesting it's getting louder. Going on what I had, the noise didn't appear to get louder as it began to fail, and it's quite possible yours isn't going to. I did notice that the engine shuddered a little on stopping it prior to replacement.

Anything like that happening on yours and do you have an IID?

I'm with GraemeS on the throttle use, and the workshop manual shows the item as "electric throttle".

AJGalaxy, interesting about the Touareg, I wonder if the FF has a similar use as when the one on mine failed, as said the engine shuddered on shutdown. Cheers

The 4.4 TDV8's EGR throttle isn't closed by the ECM on shutdown which is why I developed my add-on module. I'm pleased to read that the Touareg closes off intake air on shutdown as mine's engine now stops slightly differently - I thought more abruptly but perhaps more smoothly as it seems there is no run-down.

rjff, the engine runs fine and no shudder on shut down.

Thanks for your reply. All I can suggest at the moment is to keep an ear to it and come back if you begin to find any more symptons. Lots of folks here will know much more than me but, if you don't have problems at the moment keep on truckin' and enjoy. Being a bit cheeky, but are you happy wielding spanners, if so there's lots of help here.

FWIW, I bought a Gap iid and it has helped in diagnosing the throttle fault, with help from "gonna go double r" as well. Cheers
