United Kingdom 2019 Range Rover Autobiography 5.0 SC V8 Corris Grey

I have just had turbo failure in my 66 plate SDV8 at 41,000 miles. Appears this may be a problem?

My replacement car is a RRS V6 Autobiography from Thrifty but I had to push to get that. They tried to fib me off with a Mitsubishi ... Current: L460 Autobiography D350 2023, Defender D240 HSE 2020, Defender 110 Adventure 2015, Defender 90 XS 2012, Lightweight Ser III 1975, Aston Martin DBS Manual 2008

Exactly the same age as mine, 66 plate.
It's due to go in again as it now has the service due mileage counting down fast. Going in for 2 days for full software update to very latest release which should sort apparently.

Hope yours gets fixed as fast as mine was

When you say drain update thing... what is that? Do they do the update as part of fixing the blown turbo? I am worried mine will go again. Mine has now been away for 2 weeks. No call from JLR Customer Care got 8 days. No call from my dealer... Current: L460 Autobiography D350 2023, Defender D240 HSE 2020, Defender 110 Adventure 2015, Defender 90 XS 2012, Lightweight Ser III 1975, Aston Martin DBS Manual 2008

Why isn't it fixed after 2 weeks, that's just poor.
The update is for the infotainment and service countdown issue

My SDV 8 should be fixed this week. I understand the changes to the oil pipe allows oil not to stand in the turbo, by placing a downward bend in the oil line. This is my understanding but may be far from accurate.

Thanks for that.

Just had a call from JLR customer care. My dealer was supposed to call but they haven’t. I am not surprised sadly.

Anyway, the update is that metal has got into the engine from the blown turbo so a new engine is going to be fitted. I am reassured that is being done as I did fear further problems given how sudden and catastrophic the failure was. Just glad it’s under warranty and will be extending mine... Current: L460 Autobiography D350 2023, Defender D240 HSE 2020, Defender 110 Adventure 2015, Defender 90 XS 2012, Lightweight Ser III 1975, Aston Martin DBS Manual 2008

Turbos can fail on any motor, wondering what type of failure, must have been bearing to get metal into the oil system. Usually this type of failure would cause a pretty quick shutdown.

It was pretty sudden. Total loss of power in 10 to 15 seconds. Engine started shaking the whole front end of the car. More or less had to coast onto the hard shoulder with significant loss of power. It felt a catastrophic and quick mechanical failure. Current: L460 Autobiography D350 2023, Defender D240 HSE 2020, Defender 110 Adventure 2015, Defender 90 XS 2012, Lightweight Ser III 1975, Aston Martin DBS Manual 2008

Perhaps a dropped Valve that went out the exhaust and destroyed the turbo and engine. Can't see turbo failure doing the damage you describe, high pressure failure would mean the blades caught in the intercooler. So it would seem to me that the turbo is blamed for some other catastrophic failure.

That would make more sense. As it felt like it was running on a few cylinders less than 8 ... will call the dealer this week if they don’t call me. Thinking about that statement I know who will be calling who! Current: L460 Autobiography D350 2023, Defender D240 HSE 2020, Defender 110 Adventure 2015, Defender 90 XS 2012, Lightweight Ser III 1975, Aston Martin DBS Manual 2008

Update on blown turbo. Fragments of metal found in my engine so a new engine being installed... currently half way through that. Will definitely be extending my warranty... The extended warranty should be cheaper with a new engine Laughing Current: L460 Autobiography D350 2023, Defender D240 HSE 2020, Defender 110 Adventure 2015, Defender 90 XS 2012, Lightweight Ser III 1975, Aston Martin DBS Manual 2008

This is really interesting! Been thinking of upgrading from my L322 TD6 to a late L322 TDV8 or early L405 TDV8.

I'd heard the 3.0 V6 engines can snap cranks but thought the 4.4 TDV8 was pretty bullet proof. Seemingly not the case!

I'm also a bit nervous about putting so much money into a "diesel" so researched the 5.0 SC petrol only to read that there are issues with timing chains / guides that is an extensive repair or preventative work!

Whilst I hate to be defeatist but with all that in mind I think I might just stick with the old TD6 for the time being at least. Current

Don't worry, you've just got a bout of forumitis, a contagious condition brought on by anxiety generated by reading the symptoms of a few whilst ignoring the pleasures of the many. It's a common condition, spread by exposure to the internet, but can be cured by clicking the large X in the top right hand corner of your screen, and replacing it with a big leather-bound "O" that makes your car do what you tell it.

Diesels will be around for a good few years yet, especially the new, Euro 6 compliant cars. If there's to be a diesel pogrom, it'll be the old smokers that get banished to the Gulags.
