A colleague’s been running a Disco Sport, from new, for the last 2 years and 8 months or so. It’s currently showing somewhere between 110 and 120,000 miles. It’s not been brilliant for the last year. It’s left him stranded many times, requiring 3 new EGR valves, a new turbo, some cooling issues to be fixed and now a replacement automatic gearbox. He’s not happy and he won’t be replacing it with either a Disco Sport or a Jaguar F-Pace.

This got me to thinking: A lot of people who complain about the unreliability of JLR products usually extolle the virtues of near mythical German (or Swedish) reliability and wonderful service support. Yet, many of these issues are not unique to LR products; the gearboxes are near universal ZF units, EGR valves are a consumable item for every manufacturer, while turbo failures are also common to all. What I was surprised to find is that the Audi warranty runs out at 60,000 miles in year 3 (just like Volvo’s does), while the longest mechanical breakdown insurance that they sell also expires at just 90,000 miles. Running an Audi, with the problems he’s undeniably had over the last 8 months, there’d have been no recovery, no loan car and no repair. The cost of the ZF ‘box would have been catastrophic.

If these products have the stellar reliability and build quality that we’re led to believe, why are the warranties of limited use to some who uses one for a living?

For warranty and service, go Korean.

Hyundai and Kia have some of the longest warranties out there at around 7 years. Ok so you don’t get the brand cache of an Audi and a slightly more plastic interior but I’m leaning that way slightly for SWMBOs next car. Something like a Tucson or SantaFe.

If that’s right about the Audi warranty then it Makes JLRs service legendary...... warranties used to be 3 years and 60,000 miles on pretty much all brand new cars, very few had unlimited mialage warranties and I think that is still the case with many brands.

You are correct about the commonality of part though, it is in most cases though the installation of the parts and associated plumbing which causes the problems. Take for example the 3.6, which we all know can have a liking for turbos, this is however more common on the same engine in the sport, due to installation constraints.

Would I buy a q5. No, my mate had one for a few years and it was the blandest thing I’ve sat in. That said the new Audi’s with the virtual cockpit are quite nice, I had an A4 avant as a rental last year for a week and it was plush but boring. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

My dads got the Hyundai santafe he loves it no problems to date has had it nearly 4years

A friend of mine had a Q7 and was holidaying in France and it broke down, he could not get it fixed in France after taking it to a Bosch specialist and an Audi he ended up getting Red pennant to fetch it home after 3 weeks, If it has Boobs, engine or wheels it will cost money?

why not consider a volvo such as XC40/XC60? they are getting good reviews and the interiors are said to be very nice.

Same warranty limitations as the Audi, unfortunately. It’s the one thing that would stand between me and ever having another one (I had several Volvo’s before my LR’s). The XC60 is a good looking car too
