Hi Guys,

Before I descend on local LR dealer, (oh oh!) wondered if anyone out there can help with this one?

At motorway speed (50-80mph) car feels as if it needs wheels balancing. Car judders/shakes (whether accelerating or decelerating) and seems to “come and go” even at same speed? This shake does not present itself through steering wheel but is felt throughout the cabin - causing my teeth to chatter while driving!!

Had all 4 wheels checked and balanced and STILL having issue.

Problem has only just shown up - have had no such problem previously.

Nothing appears loose underneath.

Any ideas please?

Hi Mate,

It was a misshapen rear tyre that was the problem on mine. Replaced and the problem went away after much scratching of heads at the garage!

All my tyres still original and in good condition. (Even wear)
Would this have not shown up on wheel balancing if tyre issue?? All 4 wheels have just been balanced.

Hi Mate,

They did all the balancing and ball joints and the Dealer took the car home and agreed the wobble still existed, so they took it to a tyre specialist who removed all the tyres and they identified the problem. I think with the wider and lower profile tyres then on the than the L322, the L405 seems to be more prone to problems should any tolerance not be quite right. Worth getting it checked out by a specialist.....probably not one of the more well advertised ones!  SDV8 AB MY 2019

Tyres balance at my local tyre dealer I trust and have used for years. I do believe from your post this problem could be tyre related so will re visit them prior to getting main dealer involved.
How did the verify it was a tyre problem? Why wouldn’t this be spotted on balancing machine I wonder??

Hi C,

Not sure Mate. I can contact my Dealer if you like, but rest assured I had both rear tyres replaced and the issue went away. Suspect the balancing machine will tell you where to put the weights, but if the tyre is knackered, you are still going to get issues even if the weights are deemed to be in the right place by the machine (sorry, not a tyre expert!).

I experienced the same: during the first half year the judder was caused by a faulty sensor After it was replaced the judder disappeared. During the winter the judder appeared again but all the sensors checked OK. The reason was ice on the wheel rims from inside. I have to clean the snow/ice with my hands. It always helped. Good luck.

+1 for Andy's thoughts. Also on another car I had similar which turned out to be binding calipers/pads. Showed up by affected wheel hub and rim being hotter than the others. Did happen at various speeds/times. Just a thought. Cheers

Just a quick update. Took car back to tyre specialist who dismissed idea that a tyre can “go” mis-shapen and also pointed out this would have been picked up on balancing machine.

FYI -My judder occurs only at speeds above 50mph.

Car now booked in at main dealer tomorrow and I will advise them of your suggestion Richard (and yours Andy)

Visited main dealer who test drove car with me and knew instantly what problem was!

Apparently this is a common fault on L405s fitted with 22” alloys, shod with Continental / Conti silent tyres - the foam inside the tyre delaminates from the rubber leading to foam “slopping”around the void inside the tyre cavity, generating the “judder” I complained of!

Once the tyre is off the rim, the evidence of the foam debris is clearly visable. Dealer suggests the fitting the standard Continental tyre or choosing Pirelli Scorpions.

Given that this alloy wheel & tyre combo was an expensive upgrade (and came with these tyres) surprised by their recommendation as new vehicles still using these wheel/tyres. (And fitted on brand new vehiclie in showroom) Also, not happy to switch to different tyre for front/rear - AND concerned that this problem may reoccur!???

I Will replace the two faulty tyres soon as starting to wear on shoulders (26k miles in 42 months) I have asked dealer to remove the debris and refit on the rims in shortterm (losing the “silent” benefit inside cabin.)

Not happy that perfectly good tyre could delaminate prior to being worn, And of course there will be no recourse to Continental as they, I’m sure will dismiss any claim - as does dealer!

At least I got to solve my issue and can pass on my experience to you guys.

That does not sound simple and sorry it sounds like "it's down to you" from the dealers/tyre manufacturers.

Interesting that a wheel balance would miss this, yet shows up on real roads.

Is it not as simple as removing the foam ? Or gluing back in place ?

I think standard fit is now Pirelli 22’s though I’ve stuck with Contis.
