Exterior door handle not working?

Another day, another problem.

This time the outside door handle stopped functioning ('03 TD6), as well as the central locking from manual door key operation (remote never worked). I found a video and some general references from searching that the actual mechanical cable needs replacing. I find that surprising that the cable itself would break, and rather not just "pop out" or dislocate. Anyone with similar experience? Also, how would that problem be related to the key operation not working either (as they happened simultaneously)?

im having the same problem, my rear passenger door is stuck closed, only remedy at the moment is taking the door off as i cant open it to get the door card off.

But by all accounts it is most likely the cable that has snapped, cheap part but a bitch to do!

Maybe try pulling the fuses or a battery reset first.

Had to replace the cable to outer handle not long ago, the nipple had seized at handle end so instead of turning slightly it was twisting the inner which snapped had to take handle off in the end to remove nipple gave it a coat of copper grease on refitting new cable hope it helps stop it seizing up.

So both your outside and inside handles are not working, Snowy? You can probably feel from the resistance of the handle whether the mechanical rod(s) have disconnected/broken or whether the door is merely locked.

KDS, did you grab a photo of how exactly this part broke? Plastic? Is there no way of mending it (glue, zip-ties, welding)? I hate spending money on complete assemblies when the culprit is a tiny sub-part.

yes very little if any resistance on the outside handle.

Interestingly the interior handle raises the door button but will not open the door.

Problem i have is i cant open the door to get the door card off! only suggestion so far is removing the whole door, which i dont like the sound of!

Any assistance very welcome!

No photo sorry, it was the nipple on the end of the cable that had sheared off, I guess once I had got the nipple out the lever arm maybe could have drilled it out then silver solder inner cable back on but then it would have meant shortening the outer cable to suit so just not worth the bother for the price of new complete cable.

Had the same on the drivers door in the summer. Would open from the inside, but not the outside. Bought a cheap generic cable from eBay and all is well again. RR History

Considering the availability of China sourced cables on eBay - this problem must be more prevalent than I figured. Cable ordered, hopefully it arrives before Xmas so I can put it under the tree first. Razz

Well just to conclude! I have put this off for ages not really wanting to take the whole door off, then suddenly one morning it opened! Gotta love a Landrover!

So i took the opportunity to get the door card off as i was sure something was broken, nothing looked rusted broken or worn, but it looked like the mechanism was getting stuck so it was opening but not closing again, so i greased it all up made sure it was working and put it all back together.

Fingers crossed it lasts another few years!

C
