Dont really get your point Mick The Verizon phone uses the Qualcomm MDM6600 chip which is capable of doing everything but if Apple fetch out a phone now and used all the facilities then thats the iphone 5!! Verizon have obviously wanted the phone before the iphone 5 release date so Apple have created an 4a for them which i guess will be a testbed for this new chip.
In any case unless you travel worldwide and need to connect to odd networks in India etc what do you need a CDMA phone for. Ex D1, D2, D3 owner now 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE

O2 is part of the Telefonica group and i know that Telefonica o2 has a some CDMA networks ie Czech Republic which are used , i think, purely for data. So maybe they might have access , before the Iphone 5, to CDMA phones. Its more than likely that after the the initial Verizon sale Apple will want to expand to the other markets that haver large CDMA networks i.e India and China , only surmising of course. Ex D1, D2, D3 owner now 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE

What he said...

Tbf there's loads of CDMA markets a lot of the existing carriers are trialling MIMO and COFDM which on an RF basis are ostensibly the same thing; that said the major driving force was actually Verizon: plus ca change. Anyhoo CDMA is an ok upgrade as it is a loooooong way off LTE- year before last they extended the 2G life span until 2020 so don't chuck the 6310i yet.

My favourite upgrade is the 'off' button: sometimes I long for the good old days of not being always accessible!!
