United Kingdom 2011 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Mariana Black

Thanks, I have managed to find the write up - Technical (L322) > 2011 fuel gauge posted in March.

Just its strange it happened when my battery connectors came lose and the problem appeared. I have ordered some shims which go over the battery connectors so when I put the clamps back on they will fit nice and tight, my guess is the connectors on the new battery are slightly smaller than my old battery, and these range rover connectors are not the best design.

I haven't yet tried putting the connectors together to reset everything, due to work (getting home pretty late)will get this done today though. I am hoping this will reset everything (fingers cross) and drive as it should.

One thing I forgot to mention I did have it on a diagnostic machine and it was telling me the ECU was faulty and couldn’t be reset, any ideas ? or could this be one of those random faults that can be ignored or will clear once I reset by touching the connectors ?

I have near full tank of fuel, so if it’s the sender unit connectors …it’s going to be a pain in the behind to get it sorted.

Will keep everyone posted.

Once again thanks for your help with this!

Don't give up hope on a battery reset sir... You would be surprised how much "stuff" it fixes...

If your ECU is in distress i.e. you sat there disconnecting & reconnecting the power quickly, over & over & over... This is the perfect example of A, how to upset/distress an ECU and B, exactly why above i suggested "reconnecting your earth lead last & in one fluid motion" so as to avoid putting ECU's into "distress" when reconnecting a battery...

Thumbs Up

Ok, tried the battery reset, it didnt work.

Is there any particular way i need to do this, example disconnect leave it 30 mins and than touch the cables together or it doesn't really matter.?

The most important thing is to wait at least 10 minutes after you switch off to allow everything to shut down.
You will see a long yellow sticker on the bonnet scuttle detailing shutdown before battery disconnection.

Update

Ok Guys did the ECU reset by putting the terminals together, no luck here didn’t do anything. Tried it a number of times but same thing.

A friend of mine ran a diagnostic and it cleared all other errors apart from the ECU, which came up with a fault. Sorry not sure what the code was.

I even disconnected the battery for most of the day hoping it would clear itself, but still nothing.

I started the attempt to get into the tank and have a look, check out the sender unit wiring, it wasn’t the easiest task as I had a near full tank of fuel, however visually it all looked fine, unplugged and plugged the connectors a few times, moved the sender float up and down a few times. It was getting dark as I started the job late that afternoon and not having any more patient decided to put it all back together.

Started the car and still had the issue, so decided just to take it for a ride. After around 15 mins of driving, bobs your uncle needle moved up to full tank and car drove as it should.

Took it for a 15 min drive and it was fine, drove it back home, parked up we have a slight slope where we live and , bang it does it again. needle goes empty.

Took it for another drive after 5 mins needle went back to full, took it back home but this time round parked it the other way round and it was fine. (me being paranoid)

This could be pure pot luck that its working, faulty sender units issue could be internment correct ?

Anyway took it out on Saturday evening for a few hours drove around 40mile, parked it on the hill different way round to force it not to work but it was fine, on the kerb nope still working. ( I was just being paranoid since this might of made it stop working the first time round) anyway all working fine.

Sunday been driving the car most of the day on and off , fast hard driving at times to see if the problem comes back however good news it hasn’t. Clocked around 80miles.

Could this mean the system took bit of time to correct itself?

I haven’t had time to put it on the diagnostic machine again, may do so when I get time to visit my mates who has the machine, it be interesting to see if the ECU error has gone.

The only thing I need to do is sort the battery terminals out as I am not 100%, clamps can only be tighten to a certain amount, so I have ordered some shims, hopefully this will give me a tighter fit.

Now the issue I have is as the problem gone away for good? Do I still change the sender unit and get it all checked out?

Your input would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Bobby yes the sender issue is intermittent.

There are two connectors within the sender unit that need replacing.
Sounds like you got very close!

Send me a PM with your email and I can send you the PDF instructions.

. Cheers, Greg
