How long do you expect a car battery to last? Mine has just failed on my 2008 TDV8.

I took the old battery out and noted it was a Land Rover OE battery (Varta manufactured). The date stamp on the terminal is "04 07". Presuming that means April 2007, it is the original battery so over 10 years old. Pretty good going that.

10 years, that is good!

Can usually expect to look at replacing every 3 years or so, but this often depends on how the car is used. .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember

Unusually good life - maybe it's been "cossetted" with a trickle charger when not in use for any time.

I had a battery last 9 years in a "premium german sportscar" that was renowned for normally killing batteries in 2 ~3 years - but it was a good manufacturer (also the OE battery) & probably because it was on the trickle charger whenever not being used. Paul,

Thats lastes extraordinarily well! And a damn fine reason to stick with genuine batteries...

5 years is my rule of thumb - but I usually wait for the first sign of a problem, then replace.

10 years is exceptional

I sort of agree with Alistair, mine seem to last either 5years or 5 minutes
I have had a couple that have failed within days of fitting, but never had a problem getting them swapped under warranty and then the replacement has been fine.

One that failed was on the only brand new car I have ever owned.... My P38 2.5td. It was stuck in my garage ,forward facing, and totally dead. I got LR assistance out and he said he thought it was the newest car he had ever been called to at the time.
He had to ring up and get talked through the emergency door unlocking procedure.
When we eventually got it going and out of the garage he tested the battery and it was an absolutely dead short.
He removed it took it to the local MD and returned with a brand new replacement which was still on the car when I sold it 8 years later.

Just changed the battery in SWMBO's Smart. That was the original from 2008. Certainly for the last 5 years it's been cosseted on a C-Tek although it does lots of short runs. 2017 5.0 Autobiography Supercharged

Did my disco last year and that was an original on a 2010 so 7 years, the 4.4 is still on its original at 6 years, swmbos old Skoda lasted 10 years.....

So the rule of thumb is...... anywhere from 2 to 10 years.... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I changed my 2011 battery in June, not because it had failed, but because I didn’t want it to let me down on the first freezing morning of winter and have to do it in the cold.
The fork lift truck at my son’s works needed a replacement so they fitted it as a temporary fix, and I noticed last week it is still fitted.

My 07 tdv8 is still on its original battery!! No signs of failure as yet, used my pre heater every morning on full cycle for around 6 weeks now too, every time i start it im expecting the hdc warning like my old td6 used to throw before i replaced the battery! I know now ive said this failure is around the corner! 2004 td6 l322 - gone

I replaced the battery in mine a few months ago. It was the original battery from new (2004). I was impressed! Only changed it as it went flat after being left 2 weeks in an airport car park. Shoved a Yuasa 020 in from Halfords, let's see how long taht one lasts  2004 Vogue TD6 - Remapped

I've just very recently changed the original battery on my 2010. The only issue was that the FBH wouldn't fire (rest voltage was low at 11.4V). Everything else seemed to work ok though. 2010 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

Land Rover & Rover used to be well known for replacing batteries on very new cars because of the number if unsold cars stored on local airfields etc & left with stupid things like interior lights on,. The cars would be jump started eventually
& sold, but the batteries were already damaged & would then need chsnging ioften under early warranty.
From whst I remember, they then instigated a policy of disconnecting the battery when stiring them Paul,
