3.6 TDV8 ticking noise

Hi All,

My 3.6 TDV8 has developed a ticking noise. It sounds like an exhaust leak when there is a slight blowout of a manifold gasket.

I have crawled all over the engine with the covers off trying to narrow down where the noise is coming from, but I can't figure it out. Sometimes it sounds like it is coming from the belt area, other times from the middle of the right hand head. With the car on the hoist the noise is quieter from underneath, so it is definitely up top somewhere.

The belt, pulleys and tensioner were replaced about 40 000km ago. Perhaps I should be replacing them all again.
The engine has no EGRs or EGR coolers as I have completely deleted them after an EGR cooler failure. I have emulators in place, no faults get logged, all is well in that department.

Has anyone heard of head to manifold gasket failures on these? All intercooler hoses are silicon apart from the short elbows. I do have new ones of those waiting to go in.

Thanks for you input.

More than likely the exhaust manifold gasket or manifold.
Had to change my manifold as it warped and snapped studs.
If it’s just started hopefully just the gasket, good luck.

I am in the process of changing the right hand manifold and gasket.
Do not, under any circumstances, try this at home.
I am a mechanic with many years experience, doing this in my fully equipped workshop on a hoist. I have spent about 15 hours so far, and I am only at the stage of tightening up the new manifold retaining nuts. Many are near impossible to get to.
It took me the best part of 3 hours just to remove the studs from the head once the manifold was off. I can see the total job time being 20-25 hours.
If the left side one lets go I will be paying someone to do it. It just isn't worth my time and effort, not to mention actual physical pain, to do the job.

For the record, the old manifold had a noticeable bend in the mounting face. Hopefully the replacement fixes the noise!

Jon are you talking about the exhaust manifold? If so, did you look at the turbos while there? ______________________________
