Defender or Range Rover ?

We have a few 2006/7 FFRR's for sale on the forum @ £6K

I did a search on Autotrader for 2006 Defender 90's, price range £10K - £35K Shocked

Explain..... .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

Its an interesting comparison but only value wise. I sold my 2007 Defender XS a couple of months ago, 75k miles, for £18,500. I bought it to scratch an itch and enjoyed driving it, but the cabin leaks (despite new windscreen, door seals, bulkhead seals etc.) drove me crazy! I always worried if it would still be there when I returned after parking up too. I directly replaced the Defender with a 2012 VSE with 90k mile for £16k, no cabin leaks but turbo drain and oil cooler to keep me occupied instead.

I run both. A 1994 300Tdi 110 and my 2007 SC.

And we have a 1973 Series III awaiting restoration.

All completely different. So many happy memories attached to our 110, and with a VNT and longer gearing it’s huge fun to drive, but it’s the SC that I use most. Si. <This is my name.

I have both and as people have said they are sooo different but awsome in so many ways, i love the defender as every journey feels like an expedition even the family says its comfortable on long drives!

But the RR is something else, can drive 600 miles in a day and get out feeling perfect!

Australia 2008 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Atacama Sand

I have a 1989 Australian Army 110 wagon with factory fitted Isuzu truck motor and the L322 3.6. Very different vehicles. Both have strong appeal in different ways.

The 110 took us on a few great trips, the last through the Simpson desert. I rebuilt this car from the chassis up. So the family don’t want me to sell it, but they no longer want to do big trips in it. Understandably when the L322 is there.

The L322 is a lot more comfortable and has better traction capability. Once I would have never considered such a vehicle. I think that’s the mind set of many defender enthusiasts. People selling and buying a Defender probably have a difference appreciation of the Defender and so their value.

I still can’t believe a parts bin run out model Defender is asking more used than full retail/new price. ______________________________

I'd had my 2003 110 TD5 SW for 9 years, until I sold it earlier this year to buy the 2011 L322 5.0 S/C.

I would have very happily kept the 110, I loved that vehicle and had kept it in perfect condition, but fiance (now wife) felt we could have something more "comfortable" for the mainly long motorway journeys it did.

Having owned it for 9 years and put 50k+ miles on it, I sold it at a good profit, not something I suspect I'll be doing with the L322!

I wondered if Defender prices had hit a peak given the various diesel scandals and emissions zones coming in. Living in central London, I'd have to ditch it in another year or two anyway, so I decided to sell a bit earlier than I had planned whilst everything still worked perfectly Smile.

I do like my L322, but as others have commented, a Defender just feels special in a completely different way, and even after 9 years I still loved getting into it every single time. Having said that, I do now appreciate all the creature comforts of my L322 though, the cooled seats, radar cruise, etc., and the different stately sense it gives you.

If I had space for another car, I would have maybe kept the 110, but I hate not using cars regularly, and don't think it does them any good sititing around.

I know they have a cult status currently, and I have a Series 1 107" I won't be selling any time soon, but I do wonder if the prices of your "average" standard run of the mill Defender will come down to more sensible levels as various emissions changes come into force, and/or a new Defender is finally produced?

I think the price difference (Defender bubble aside) is due to running costs. What was £80k+ to buy still has the same running costs at 10+ years old, even if you can buy it for £6k.

I had the same choice a few years ago. Then I drove a Defender. By far the worse thing I've ever driven. Steering is so vague it's unbelievable. Just didn't fell safer either.

Vague steering on a Defender is usually a worn steering box.

My 110 has very positive and direct steering, even on larger tyres. Tyre pressures can make a huge difference, too.

Mine also has stiffer gas shock absorbers with heavy duty rear springs, but standard rubber bushes. Handles like a tall go-kart. Si. <This is my name.

After almost stuffing a Defender into a dry stone wall in a manoeuvre at which my Rangie wouldn't have blinked, I decided they are not for me. Also, a long motorway journey in one would fill me with dread.

I do not understand the question, its a bit like asking wife or mistress.
You just have to have both as they are for totally different things.
Defender is for getting dirty and trying things that you would not think of doing with the Range Rover. The Range Rover is for comfort, long duration, something that you wont feel ashamed of. letters not necessarily in the right order
