Highly unlikely. When my turbo 'went' I was accelerating off a roundabout onto a dual carriageway - so I was heavy on the accelerator. There was a metallic ping and then bye bye engine!! A premature assumption unless it is determined that this particular engine had a single drain. |

From what I understand about the drain problem, it wouldn't do it anyway. It really needs a catastrophic failure of the turbo seals to put a substantial amount of lubrication oil into the intake. Generally they empty the sump in around 20 to 30 seconds or thereabouts. The drain mod doesn't have anything like this amount of oil in play prior to the mod. BMW i3 Electric Car

I have decided to build an automatic kill facility for mine to close the throttle butterfly, as I did for my TD5 D2. I had hoped that the ecm would close the butterfly in times of uncontrolled revving, albeit with the ignition still switched on, but obviously the butterfly is not being closed other than to increase airflow through the EGR valve as required.

Good news for those without the mod in terms of not worrying about any possible catastrophic engine failure related, although if there was a link and given the runaway sympton, guessing it becomes a critical safety issue infoming a manufacturer recall and replacement at LR's cost? |

Sure you're right, given how many unmodified turbo drain 4.4 tdv8's out there but catastrophic engine failure / runaway engines seemingly very rare. |

I completely agree, in my view IF diesel runaway could result from the turbo drain problem, Land Rover would have to do a safety recall, the potential danger would be immense. BMW i3 Electric Car

LR replaced many 3.0 TDV6 secondary turbos when early D4s smoked because they considered that the turbos were faulty before changing their view that the problem was resolved by changing the drain to go directly to the sump. My D4 had 1 replaced then later was in line for its 2nd well after end of warranty but I fitted the revised drain myself instead. If the drain is not totally free then the oil will exit via the the seals, which really aren't seals, just a normally harder way for the oil to escape. |

Engine has now been examined to confirm metal particles in the oil and larger fragments in the oil filter. New engine required.
