Hello everyone,

I am new to this but I had just purchased a 2006 L322 4.2 Supercharged. It has done 105,000 and has a full service history and appears to have been maintained very well.

However there is a whining noise and the pitch gets higher as speed increases. If i take my foot of the throttle it reduces although does not completely go away. Also when accelerating in 2nd and 3rd in particular there is a sort of rough grounchy vibration, not like going over a cattle grid, but very noticeable. The gearbox shifts smoothly and works very well on the whole so I wouldn't have thought it was this but having read through a lot of posts on here and various other forums I am wondering if its the torque converter or transfer box.

Can anyone help point me in the right direction? Obviously would rather replace one and not the both

Would check transfer box. Oil level ok? Replace oil?

I often find I have a whining noise that increases with speed when my wife is in the car  Too many toys, not enough time

Well thats a separate issue

Any idea as to where the noise is coming from?

Front, rear or underneath?

I ask as a supercharger on the way out will whine and produce a graunching noise.

It's a job to say although the supercharger seems perfectly fine. I once had a 1976 Morris marina just for a laugh and the centre props haft baring went and I would say that the whining noise is very similar to that but without the serious judder I had with that.
