Engine management light on

Well Thursday night shortly after driving through a lot of standing water, whether this is relevant or not, my engine management light has come on. The car drives perfectly however.
Is it still ok to drive it anyway?
Should I call the RAC, can they diagnose / reset?
Should I drive slowly to local independent 6 miles away or could that damage something?
Thanks in advance

Ideally you would get yourself a Gap IID Tool. They are really essential kit and would give you the exact error code that's causing the light.

The car would put a more severe 'restricted performance' message on the dash if it thought it needed to, so I'm presuming it's a yellow light.

Once when I changed my air filters I forgot to plug in one of the sensors. When I turned on the ignition I got and error code but as soon as I plugged the sensor back in the error went. So you may just have got a bit of water in somewhere causing it. These things are submersible to 700mm so shouldn't really happen and may be a less than waterproof connector somewhere, of if somebody's done a cable repair in the past and just bodged it letting water in. Found one of those on mine!

You could try a battery reset. Pls search here for the correct procedure, it goes along the lines of disconnect two battery leads and leave for a bit, then touch the two disconnected leads together which removes all residual current. But pls look it up.

Last thought - have you pressed the 'show warnings' menu? That's via the button on the steering wheel that shows the menu between the tach and the speedo?

Or just take it to your Indy. Cheers, Greg

Thanks for that. Will look for the reset procedure, and yes it is a yellow warning not a red one.
If i buy a gap tool can you sometimes just reset these errors or will it need to go in for repair anyway?
Thanks.

IID can clear codes but if there's a hard fault - the codes will come back.

The IID picks up lots of anomalies so when you first plug it in, common practice is to clear all codes then read again to see what returns.

Let's say you have a suspension warning on the dash. You'll get a yellow warning and 'suspension fault' flash up on the dash screen.

Without an IID you've got no idea what the fault or where the fault is. So you plug in the IID and it will tell you, for example Fault on height sensor rear right side. So then you know exactly what/where for investigation.

From there you can go to you Indy - or fix it yourself.

But the IID can do a lot more, e.g. you can set special suspension heights, change the CCF file for bonus DRLs and loads more.

I created a suspension preset I named JACK IT and it goes into extended off road mode height which saves me getting the jack out if I need to get underneath. (but I always put axle stands under).

Thumbs Up Going rate is £300-£340 S/H - but you'll need to pay £25 to GAP to change the VIN. Or £410 I think duckworths.

From my suspension example above, here is the error code from the IID screen.

...which led me to a dodgy bit of wiring repair at that wheel's height sensor. Easily fixed and probably covered the cost of of the IID right there.

These IID's hold their value as you can see the S/H prices are strong so if you ever sell the car you'll get the bulk of that cost back.
. Cheers, Greg

I've taken the plunge and ordered one.
I have always tackled things myself mechanically but this electronic business is all new to me!
(I own a classic car and don't trust anyone to touch it!)
Many Thanks for yoru help.
Regards Paul.

Well managed to find time to set up the IID tool last night.
Loaded the codes and found lots of them relating to Amplifier, Digital audio etc.
2 relating to PCM-Engine.

• P040D-00 (2F) Exhaust gas recirculation temperature sensor A - circuit high
( on 13-06-2018 18:22:01 at 168193 km )
• P245A-64 (EC) Exhaust gas recirculation cooler - bypass control circuit - Algorithm based failure - signal plausibility failure
( on 19-09-2018 13:46:22 at 174152 km )

So the second seems to be the one causing the management light, as it has now reset but the only 2 faults remaining are now:

DDM-Driver Door
• B1164-15 (2F) Right mirror heater output - General electrical failure - circuit short to battery or open
( on 29-09-2018 21:36:04 at 175172 km )
PCM-Engine TDV8
• P040D-00 (2F) Exhaust gas recirculation temperature sensor A - circuit high
( on 29-09-2018 21:36:00 at 175172 km )

So has anyone any idea what the P245A-64 (EC) Exhaust gas recirculation cooler fault means?

Does it need immediate attention or should I just monitor to see if it comes up again?

(The car run perfectly by the way!)

Thanks in anticipation

Paul.

Paul best to clear all codes then re-read.

The one that's likely to return is

P040D-00 (2F) Exhaust gas recirculation temperature sensor A - circuit high

This is extremely common. It causes some people issues and others no issues. It's a sensor on the NS exhaust manifold that need replacing. Many leave it with no ill effect. But it can cause the engine to run rich and prematurely fill the DPF.

I am trying to DIY replace that myself, was working on it just earlier actually. A pig of a job. You can read up here: http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic48131.html

If your car is under warranty then I'd get complaining about it now if you can.

Not sure I've seen the: P245A-64 (EC) Exhaust gas recirculation cooler fault. Plug it into search here as a starting point (if the fault returns after clearing.

Also your miles are reading in km's. Cheers, Greg

Oh, the P040D-00 (2F) won't trigger the engine management light.

It's still on I guess?

That's what I did, I read all, cleared them and then ran again to see what was left. The engine management light has now cleared so presumably it must be the P245A-64 (EC) Exhaust gas recirculation cooler fault which had caused it.

Presumably just need to change the settings on the Iphone App before using next time to change to miles.

Paul

Greg,
I spoke to my local indi about the sensor just before I came on holiday.
He was not prepared to quote an exact price, but said it is a pig of a job and that the tool is useless because they spread as the sensor is so tight, so they usually finish up breaking the old sensor and hammering on a deep socket, then just use the tool to fit the new one, which he thought was about £60-70.

Mike, that's the first bit of actual job description I've had to date! Thank you!

Sensor was LR052169 £85.54inc vat from Dan, Special tool £35 I think. Updates over on the other thread.
