Old Defender 90: Am I mad?

Hi all,

I’m sure someone will have experience or opinion, but I keep getting an itch for a Defender 90 which has some character. Something for the weekend, taking the dog to the forest, not worrying about muddy boots, the tip run, the pub run with a few mates. Also something that will provide some interest, a project, some learning.

Something like this

Or this

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ad...amp;page=5

Opinions welcome....or tell me I’m crazy.

TIA Current MY2020
Gone: 1 x L405 and 2 x L322's

Have you also started planning your security upgrades?
If you're on the Landywatch FB forum, you'll see 2 or 3 minimum a day ( ! ) get stolen.
I also get the same hankering every month when I go off-roading with our Disco 2 - then bang my head against the window & sanity is restored again - lol Paul,

As a LR 35 year veteran, my 2p:
Yes, 90s are being nicked ..a lot! And they are not comfy.
Get a Classic RR (will rise in value)....

I bought my TD5 90 county new in Feb 07 just as they were being run out, both my children took their tests in it, it does all the things you said and so much more.

Certainly a keeper, in fact my daughter already refers to it as her car.

Be aware that some people basterdise them like the first one and they are largely best left as they are.

You will never regret getting one, and a series and a 101 Forward control and letters not necessarily in the right order

Not mad at all. Had an old G reg 90, cramped inside, noisy and no creature comforts but somehow it’s got the grin factor. Got more attention than any other car I’ve owned, Pony club mums went all doe eyed when they saw it??, kids loved it and would prefer that to the L322 I once had. I will get another but it’ll be a weekend toy not a daily driver

I've got one and I love it, although it is a petrol 4.0 litre V8 automatic so that improves the appeal for me Mr. Green Mine's a 50th Anniversary one that was originally sold in Japan and was imported back here in 2014. I couldn't drive it daily but it's lovely going out for a blast on the weekend

Thanks for the replies.

I intend to use it at the weekend and keep it locked up in the garage when not in use. Just looking at the photos makes me grin and that’s what I want when I drive it..laughing and have a bit of fun.

A V8, now you’re talking, that would be great!

Youngest son will start driving soon and what a great car to learn in. Drive one of these and you can drive most things!

I guess it’s important to find an old one which has been maintained in terms of chassis, gearbox etc. Current MY2020

I'd only ever driven Defenders until I bought the L322 in Feb this year, and still hide a Series 1 107" in the garage at home - I'd have another Defender or Series in a heartbeat if I had the space and didn't live in London!

I loved driving my 2003 110 SW TD5, it had been my only vehicle for 9 years and driven all over the place, and I had no issues with long motorway drives in it. I had made various subtle modifications to up the gearing, install soundproofing, etc., that made it a brilliant driver. I only moved it on as fiancé (now wife) thought we should maybe have something more comfortable, and after 9 years of ownership, I was actually ready to try something new and couldn't justify keeping 2 cars in London (or leaving it at my parents' place where it would only rarely get used). Having only ever owned 2 Defenders, there's not many cars you can buy, run, and sell for a profit several years later!

Definitely hunt for one that's been looked after though, and not hacked about. I had really looked after mine as I intended to keep it until it died, but plans change... The first guy who came to see it bought it on the spot, and commented how rare they were to find in that condition these days. I've driven various friends' Defenders, and a good one does make such a difference.

I’ve got a 04 TD5 90 and love it Mr. Green

I have just done 2,500 miles around Europe with it Thumbs Up

Mines mainly a jobs / dogs car, but you can’t help but smile when driving them. I garage it most of the time, theft is a concern especially if you get one with straight doors etc.

If you go TD5 changing the transfer box to a lower ratio enables you to do 70 on the motorway comfortably.

As above, I went to see maybe 20/30 before I brought this one and I wasn’t even bothered about cosmetic condition.

Yes, definitely do it.

I own a 1994 300TDi 110 that’s seen many changes in the years under my ownership.

Stan, could you please edit the rotation for me. Si. <This is my name.
