2012 4.4 TDV8 Oil Cooler Replacement

I've just discovered oil in my coolant expansion tank and an oily / watery leak dripping onto the undertray. I'm assuming the oil cooler is leaking oil into the coolant and requires replacing, together with coolant flushing Big Cry

Car has 95k miles and runs ok, although guessing its a bad idea to keep running it with this issue!

Has anyone tackled this as a DIY and / or have the workshop pdf available?

Thanks

GraemeS has just done his:
http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic45147.html

Could be gasket or cracked housing.

There are many threads on the subject.

Good luck! Thumbs Up . Cheers, Greg

Read through that post -with luck it may just be the gasket or gaskets - the parts diagram only appears to show one, part LR022903 but that doesn't look like the one if you were to split the cooler itself and replace.

Looks like I could do with a copy of LTB00785v2 does anyone have access to a copy please?

...re-reading Graeme S's post suggests there are two gaskets of the same type, I need to dismantle in anycase so I'll just crack on.

Not sure where you can get TSB's but have a look on the Microcat for the parts and really good exploded diagrams. In the Wiki.

Thanks Joe90, mines a 4.4 tdv8 rather than a 3.6 but imagine if there is an 'internal' gasket in the cooler itself it'll be in both versions - nothing shown on microcat, assumedly LR want you to but a whole new cooler opposed replacing a gasket Whistle

There is a comprehensive thread on the oil cooler problem and the parts needed and process for replacement: http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic35977.html

Thanks Mike, I'd not got past page 6 on that thread and assumed it was only relating to the o rings, now reading on it provides useful info on the cooler too, including the two gasket part no's. I'll take this job on over the next few days and report back.

Any suggestions on a coolant flush and best method to remove the oil from the contaminated cooling system?

depends how much oil contamination you have....my oil cooler was replaced by the dealer under warranty and i had a small amount of oil in the coolant expansion tank which the dealer said would burn off and it did after a few long runs.. ... - .- -.

There's a good layer of oil on the surface in the expansion tank & colour of the coolant looks brown, bought a few bottles of this to hopefully flush it through clean

.
The TSB refers to the gasket between the cooler and the filter housing and to the workshop manual procedures for replacing the 2 gaskets. I concluded that this gasket was made available co-incidental with the TSB and that the WSM was updated to include dismantling the assembly to replace the gasket. No specific instructions or diagrams are shown in the TSB, with the only new piece of information being the comment that the gasket fails due to excessive heat.
I was only able to procure photos of on-screen display of the TSB.

Due to no change in any part numbers, I concluded that no improvements have been made to the filter housing or the gaskets to prevent the leaks from re-occurring and therefore a sealant on both gaskets is required. The cooler has a machined flat face whereas the filter housing has un-machined faces with recesses on both sides to house the gaskets.

I considered the possibility of mine's EGR inlet temperature sensor being inoperative may have caused the EGR cooler bypass valve to be open resulting in hotter exhaust gasses passing close to the oil cooler. However subsequent monitoring of both the EGR valve and the EGR cooler bypass valve has confirmed that the cooler bypass valve is operating in an expected manner.

Edit: The TSB was updated from the original to add more vehicles (L405 & L494?) and to add the gasket for the join in the EGR pipe leading to the air intake LR023021.

To remove the oil from the coolant was a regular dip of the wife's cotton face pads........the oil stuck to them but the coolant drained out.

There was another technique of dipping a bent coat hanger into the oil then slowly withdrawing it with the oil stuck to it.

It might be better to flush the system and replace/clean the header tank since it has a number of chambers that are hard to reach.

I think mines sufficiently contaminated that a full flush or two (or three!) is required.

Removed & split the oil cooler this morning and as suspected, the two rubber gaskets are both hard & brittle, especially the internal one that seals the cooler itself to the main body of the oil filter housing.

The plastic intake manifold / rubber sleeves are totally gunked up with thick oily deposits, so a side job to try & thoroughy clean that all out too. The two intake sensors also completely gunked up, surprised no error msgs were being displayed.
