United Kingdom 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8 Santorini Black
3.0tdv6 vs 4.4tdv8

Been looking at the 2015/2016 vogue se spec cars to compliment my current 2011 tdv8 and wondering what people’s opinions are about the 2 Diesel engine options. The v6 is obviously more economical but am I going to miss my v8?

Would welcome thoughts please.

Ta in advance.

They are both nice engines and the V6 is silky smooth and economical but, in comparison to the V8, the V6 has an amount of lag that probably surprise you when you first pull out of a junction (especially if you’re used to sequential turbochargers) and the V8 corners a fair bit flatter than the ‘6. While I don’t want to over state it, the long term durability of the V6’s crankshaft may also be a slight cause for concern.

Having been used to the SDV6 in my Disco 4’s, the TDV6 was the obvious choice, but it just wasn’t the same. I hadn’t even turned it around (let alone left the dealer’s forecourt) in the demo V8 before I realised that it was the only serious option for me Thumbs Up

Had my little 3.0 V6 Autobiography from new and love it. Very Happy

I have never driven a V8 except on the Land Rover experience day. Shocked
I have managed 56000 miles and the smile is still there when I drive. Thumbs Up

I upgraded from a 3.0 Audi Quattro and the take off I find just as good and the bonus for me is the fuel is more efficient in the Range Rover than the Audi along with the road tax being £200 cheaper.

These are all my own views and I love my V6

Went from a 3.0 TDV6 to a 5.0SC and love both engines. The torque is similar to the SC, so great for normal driving. The SC is a bit of a hooligan when revved. I'd definitely have another 3.0 again as it's very smooth, comparable to the SC at low revs. Didn't really notice the lag that's been mentioned. With short commutes, I got around 28mpg in 3.0, now getting 20 in SC. On a run it's great though, 40+ mpg.

On a limited test drive it did with 4.4, I found it a little gruff, so went SC. Having said that the thicker glass in the MY18 may negate that now.

I also went from 'plain' Vogue to AB, and to be honest, I don't think AB is worth the premium. Maybe VSE is the sweet spot. Adaptive cruise is the only thing I'd miss.

I came from the SDV6 (sequential turbo) D4, to try the virtually identical TDV6 (but with single turbo) Full Fat. It was probably the step straight from one to the other that made the low end lag apparent.

If I'd come from any other single turbo diesel, I'd probably never have noticed it either and dare say that I'd have been happy enough Thumbs Up

Don't know about the V8 4.4, but the TDV6 is a great engine, quick and smooth and in the MY18 FF has none of the acceleration lag that the D4 had (especially at junctions).

The fuel consumption is better than in a D4, and in a world which is getting more paranoid by the day re diesel engines then in this case at least "smaller is better!"

Pixelpower, I read a fair few reviews before deciding which model to buy, and in most of them the reviewers said that the VSE with TDV6 was the preferred option, so that's what I have, and to date certainly no regrets.

Hi if it falls in the range of vehicles covered by JLRP00100 Oil Dilution Issue (16 MY onwards I think) do not even consider the TDV6, yes it returns 40-42 mpg on a constant run and is cheaper to insure and tax BUT ..........
Please read the threads on Oil Dilution (and look at Disco 5, RRS, Evoque and Disco Sport forums.)
Its a tale of lies deception and couldn't care less and its always the Owners driving style that's the reason why it needs an oil service every 4,500 to 5,500 miles (but the advertising says 16,000 or 12 months and there is no info on driving style available that would see 16000 miles come up before servicing).
I had the 4.4 TDV8 in my last range Rover, epic engine and gave 32 mpg on the same journey as my 3.0 TDV6 does 40mpg I had it serviced at 12 months. My TDV6 RR is 10 months old and called up services at 5880, 4650 miles after that, 5597 miles after that then I paid for an early 16,000 mile oil change and service to reset the servicing clock to the next 16000 mile interval and guess what with the current 3.6 ratio of servicing miles to actual driven miles it will need the next oil service 4444 after the last. You may get the oil services covered by goodwill but its the hassle of taking it in to a dealer and adhering to the JLRP 00100 warning that if you drive the vehicle after the oil service message comes up due to the engine oil dilution WILL result in engine failure.
A very, very unhappy Range Rover TDV6 present owner. Journey started in a LR2B at 16 and has incl. just about every Land Rover, Disco, RRS and Range Rover Vehicle owned or driven, I even worked for the company when it was owned by BAe - It must be a madness!!! because to add to my 4.4 TDV8 Westminister In Baltic Blue I bought a second L322 as a commuter bus, TD6 2004 Vogue in Oslo Blue with cream leather now both gone replaced with what could turn out to be my biggest mistake. It is a point, the 2016 D4 SDV6 had to have an additional, unscheduled, oil change in the year that I had it. Fortunately, I had a good dealer that sorted the cost out with LR.

Of these two, the 4.4 would be my choice. First, there seem more reports of problems with the TDV6 (search on here and also on Disco and RR Sport forums). The risk is probably small, but is it worth taking? Secondly, dealer comment to me was that the TDV6 was about the same in performance as the 322 TDV8. The SDV8 in the 405 is a distinct step up from the 4.4 TDV8 322. Overtaking in sport mode put a smile on my face anyway. Finally, I'd fear that if I got a TDV6 I'd think I could have done better and regret it. Going by recent press reports V8 engines won't be available at all in the RR from about 2020, I'd want to have one while I can.

Given all the negativity about diesels I chose the 5.0SC. I have not regretted it and would not go back to diesel. Only Range Rovers since 1988

It depends what sort of driver you are, what you expect from a car and how many miles you drive. If you have any doubt which you already have - Do yourself a favour - spend a day driving the V8 and then drive the V6

Personally I wouldn’t even contemplate anything other than the V8, the power delivery and torque curve is endless right up to and beyond 130 - trust me the Torque from this engine is stunning. If I am having a lazy relaxed day with the family I can also get 33/35 mpg. If I am on my own it will give any supercar a damn good run for their money - hunting down the odd Porsche!

Plus there is the engine failure debacle with the V6

If you enjoy pooteling about in no hurry then go for the V6 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

As others have said, drive both and make your choice, i drove a 3.0 13 plate and it was a nice relaxed drive. I haven't driven a SDV8 but if its better than my 2011 4.4 TDV8 then it must be a real gem. I had mine remapped but it wouldn't be a Porsche beater and I'm an awesome driver, F1 material!!!! Seriously, its a range rover and for me it should be effortless with a wall of torque which the V8 has. 2015 4.4 AB
