As we were only an hours drive from Garda, we thought we’d go to Salo on its west bank and visit a restaurant we know. It’s called Osteria de Mezzo and it’s run by Mauro and his wife, Roberta. It is possibly the nicest food I’ve ever had. We both had the chefs fantasy which is supposed to be 5 courses but when you add the amuse bouchée and the fact I requested the tiramisu (which they did as an extra rather than instead of the dessert course) it was a test getting through it all. We started with an amuse bouche of mini pizza. This was followed by small fillets of fish from the lake dusted in salted flour and deep fried and laid on a pickled pea purée. This again was followed by a freshwater fillet on mini roasted veg. This was followed by pappardelle with a duck ragout and ricotta cheese smoked in raspberry and coriander wood. This was followed by fillet beef on a bed of marinated aubergine and shavings of black truffle. Then we had the tiramisu which added a bit of theatre. Lastly was the plate with mint panna cotta, shortcake biscuits with vanilla ice cream, chocolate marzipan and mini merengues. Then coffee.

We arrived at camping La Fournace just short of Bellagio on lake Como. The road in is very narrow and there were a number of close encounters with small Italian cars but nothing too big thank goodness. The site is typically Italian insofar as they squeeze as many paying customers in as possible. The view is incredible and worth the heart stopping drive in and set up.

You are reviving many happy memories of my two trips to the Italian Lakes, once in my P38 and again in my Td6.

STAN, you have to visit the restaurant in Salo. It really is a bucket list place. €42 each for the full taster menu. Excellent food and excellent value.

I am a food lover which explains my sillouette. Unfortunately they don’t allow dogs in the restaurant so even if you were a foodie you’d have to find a sitter. Not to worry, I’m sure you’ll just love the area when you get here. Hope that it cools off a bit too. My A/C in the tin tent is working overtime all night.

We celebrate 36 years at the end of the month and really couldn’t have found anyone better to do life with. Romance is subjective anyway. My wife loves sitting next to a metal box on wheels just about anywhere and can find romance in it somewhere. Luckily!

Having now left Italy we overnighted just inside the French border near Besançon and now are planted for a week in Rosans. It’s on the edge of l’haut Alpes and Drone. I should say we are two hours away from the flooding but did have a pretty spectacular storm to watch for a day.
