Should I cut holes in my tailgate?

Found this:

Here are some done a bit better:

This internet thing's pretty cool. I think it might actually catch on....

Now these are all on Toyotas and pick up trucks. Goes without saying that one done on a Range rover would have to be executed very nicely to be of suitable quality.

I like it because getting tools form the tailgate would extremely accessible, even if you've got a load of stuff in there. I can't get the space under the floor to work for a limited number of tools either, I've already got the sprinter jack, a couple of axle stands, tow bar swan neck etc in there and there's really not much more space left.

What do we think? Should I make a tailgate toolbox? Is there room in there?

I think YES!!!

PS I have mixed results with posting image links, any tips?

. Cheers, Greg

This is a smart idea as long as what ever is put in there can't float about and do damage.

folding axle stands - a nice safety item whenever jacking, handy to store on-board.
Jack - search Sprinter jack above - you need one!!

I am thinking foam inserts for the tailgate to stop anything rattling around..

Will also make it strong enough to stand on.

I'll definitely add a hand axe now.

Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

But doesn’t it mean that you have to lift and lower all of that extra weight every time that you open and close the tailgate, while the inner skin to the tailgate is there to provide box section strength, which will be compromised by cutting holes in it. It also stops the outer skin of the tailgate getting dented from the inside; van owners often line their vans with plywood to have a similar level of protection.

It’s a great sounding idea, that’s likely to cause more problems than it can solve in practice.

I agree with everything Red merle has just said.

You will no doubt end up with dents on the lower tailgate from the inside out.

You may also find there's not as much room as you think as there is a large indent where the number plate is which must reduce the depth along the centre section. 2021 D350 Fifty Edition - Carpathian Grey
