Yep, my compressor appears to have the clutch permanently engaged too.
I initially thought this was a problem but I am not convinced now, as the later compressors on ours dont seem to have a magnetic clutch (I am unclear on this, so may be wrong until I can check properly).
It does get cold as I reported before (low pressure pipe behind top of rad), just not as cold as I expected.
A new OE compressor from LR is ~£1200
A new one from elsewhere is sub £300. By contrast the valve previously discussed is £120 from LR, or half that if bought elsewhere.
I havent had time to dig into this yet, but do intend to, so would be great to hear how you get on. Too many toys, not enough time
