I will be retiring from the fire service shortly after 30 years. I have had my FF for about 7 years and it is showing it's age (15 years old now). I will get my pension and a lump sum. Thinking of spending £20,000+. And I fancy a car 3-5 years old maximum. For that sort of money I couldn't get a FF, so I am thinking of something like a Freelander or X3 etc. Any thoughts or suggestions? No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

what makes you think that you cant get a decent FF for £20k plus...plenty of 2011/12 tdv8's going for around that price.. ... - .- -.

You can get a nice Discovery 4 for that money within your age range - that's what I'm thinking of doing.

You are unlikely to find much good advice on here - there will be a few at there same stage as you ie thinking about it - and few others who have left & come back again - but most people are still here because they don't want to trade down

Whatever you do, don't go for a VW Touareg. I made the mistake and have regretted it every day since. I bought the 3.0 V6 R-line+ new and it's slow, crap gearbox, and nowhere near as enjoyable to drive.

I’ve recently sold a 2011 Vogue and after 6 years in Landrovers (3 sports and a full fat) ive switched to Jaguar. 3.0d S XF Sportbrake and I love it, quick, quiet and smooth. Apart from the road presence I don’t miss the RR at all.

A friend bought one of those (V6 Portfolio S, 4 years old, main dealer, 40,000 miles, one owner) for that budget and it’s a very nice car He’s chuffed to bits with it.

Please don’t put another X3 on the road!

The Freelander 2 is a great car, but getting back in my first FL2 after a few years of running Disco’s and the RR was a heck of a shock

Seriously, for your budget you are going to get a decent one and still be in a Range Rover.

Going back to the OP’s original question, what kinds of uses are you going to put the car to?

Towing? Carrying people and/or luggage? How many miles will you being doing? Does it need to be a dedicated 4x4, or would a regular car do the job? That sort of stuff really...
