Just a word of praise for Saddleworth Mountain Rescue teams who have now been out for 3 days and nights assisting Greater Manchester Fire and rescue service.
I have lived here all my life, but can’t remember anything quite as bad as these fires.
Luckily the wind is taking the smoke away from Saddleworth villages, but my thoughts go out to members resident in Stalybridge and Mossley who are in the thick of it.

It seems as soon as they get one area under control a new area bursts into flames.

I bet knowing the area also makes it worse - looks a beautiful part of the world.

I am about a mile away from the edge of the moor and in no danger, but my view from the lounge window and garden looks directly out to them and the RSPB nature reserve area at Dovestones.
It really is a beautiful area that will take quite a while to regain all its vegetation and wildlife.
I am very fortunate to live upwind of the fires so not getting any problems from the smoke. Stalybridge and Mossley are worst affected, but Saddleworth is clear.
Apparently their are 2 chinook helicopters being sent this morning with special high volume pumps.
The area is dotted with many reservoirs so I guess they will pump directly from the bottom ones which are gravity fed by the higher ones.

I am pleased to report that the fires are now reduced to just smouldering peat.
I have tried to show the area with the following OS map extract plus a photo taken from my back garden showing
1) Dovestone reservoir dam arrowhead in red

This one was caused by illegal bikers having a fag

The arrest has been made in relation to the Bolton (Winter Hill) fires which are approx 25 miles away , but I am sure equally worrying to locals.

There are 2 wildfires up on the Otterburn firing ranges up here in Northumberland which were caused by a military live firing exercise. The MOD are just going to let the fires burn themselves out as there is a risk to firefighters from all the unexploded ordinance which is lying around the ranges and will only tackle them if the fire spreads outside the range.

I've been working up in Kielder Forest today and the smoke can be seen from miles away  Cheers Ian
