My wife's RR L405 Supercharged (63 plate) has suddenly started to vibrate randomly.

The first occasion on the M11 I assumed it was a road surface issue but eventually pulled over to the hard shoulder and after checking tyres okay I pulled away and it had gone.

It's now happened twice more on the M40, second time it happened I had to pull over twice as the first time it didn't solve the problem.

It's been to two garages from the warranty company and neither really have any idea.

They say can't be wheel balance or prop as it would happen all the time.

It normally happens when travelling at about 85mph in the cruise and after about an hour or so but equally you can drive for 2/3 hours and not have anything.

Anyone have any ideas, the car did about 3 months ago pop up with a huge gear box error and lots of warning light but on turning off and restarted they all disappeared.

In a strong headwind mine can sometimes make a resonant buzzing/vibrating noise from the mid-upper screen area. I've examined all the screen sealing areas, airbox, etc but can't eliminate it. Once I'd figured out what it was, though, i became more relaxed about it.

A few questions about your situation, if I may, to tease out some more details:
Can you detect where the vibration is coming from?
Is the nature of the vibration one that you more feel than hear or vice verse?
If you increase or decrease speed does the vibration change or disappear?
Have you tried changing gear manually to see if the vibration disappears?
Does opening a window or manipulating the ventilator on controls have an effect?
Have you checked or tried varying your tyre pressures? 2006MY 4.2 SC

Have you had the engine mountings checked? I would. It's an expensive repair, hence why Warranty and Dealers are often coy about taking this repair on.

I have had the very same issue, also taken it to two dealers and they are both none the wiser, its random as you say, firsyt it only started at high speed but now it has started at lower speeds around 50/60 mph
Every time i had taken the workshop engineer out for a test drive but Sod’s law it stopped.

Is the nature of the vibration one that you more feel than hear or vice verse? - More hear to start, there isn't huge vibration but once it's vibrating it just carries on and is very noticeable.
If you increase or decrease speed does the vibration change or disappear? - No it won't go away until the car is stationary and then one one occasion it start again as soon as I drove off so I had to stop again.

Had a similar problem was driving me mad thought torque converter.drive shafts.gearbox etc turned out to be a bulge in the tyre across the tread hardly noticeable but when I put new tyre on all was good . perelli scorpion verde all weather around 4/5mm did not show up when balancing hope this helps

So just to update anyone who might be interested, I think the vibration was being caused by a failing tyre. That slow leak turned one day into quite a bit leak and we have to pull over and most of the inside tyre wall was torn. Pretty alarming really that this can happen.

Had a very similar random vibration on my wife's Audi Q7 at certain speeds. Turned out to be a cracked radial belt in the tire. Nearly impossible to spot with my untrained eye b/c the tire surface looked perfectly normal. Replaced the tire and all was fixed.
