I think that the idea of the key switch is so that you can put shopping into your boot without unlocking the rest of the car - once pressed you can open the boot but when you close it - it re-locks, no other lock is opened. |

On my 2011 model, I'm pretty sure pressing the fob button releases the upper tail gate, and I just pull it up. No need to press the upper release button. As Bruno points out, it only unlocks the tailgate though, not the rest of the doors, and the tailgate is re-locked when you close it.

My 2010 upper tailgate lifts off the lock so that you can open it without having to press the micro switch.....
