Annoying squeak /squeal

Was driving home the other day, I was driving for about an hour so the car was warm. I heard a intermittent squeal, though I thought the squeak was from the car in front, until it turned off, then I opened my window and discovered it was me.

Initially I thought it was from the front drivers wheel, but could see nothing wrong. I then drove to my local garage who took it for a test drive, he wasn’t sure what wheel so he got out while I drove, the squeal was very apparently coming from the rear drivers side. When the car is driving in a straight line there is no squeal, but if I apply even the slighted turn to the right the squeal returns. He checked the wheel bearings and said there was a little play but nothing mayor. The rear brake discs were good, and no scoring on the disc to suggest a trapped stone. I haven’t checked the hand brake shoes. When I first drive the car from cold, theirs no squeal, it only starts once I've done about 5 miles ish, when everything is warmed up

Anyone had a similar situation, or any advice please? Dave

Sounds very much like what I had. Turned out to be a seized caliper.

I had a similar problem, but didn’t resolve it in time and ended up with a warped disk. My sticking pads were due to the corrosion on the calliper carrier. Remove the carrier file back the area where the the pads rest on the calliper carrier to remove all of the rust and use CeraTec on those surfaces. Don’t be shy in filing back to remove all the rust, I ended up having to strip down a second time.
There is a good chance the callipers are ok. The calliper sticking is more common on the earlier type of breaks, rather than the Bembo set up on the 4.4TDV8.

Dave
I had the caliper replaced. My independent, who I trust, said it was too far gone to repair.

Some people have managed to rejuvenate them though.

Thanks for the replies guys. As it's only just started and I've only driven the car for a few miles since, i'm hoping i can resolve it with too much expense. Dave

Sadly the larger Bembo set up on the 4.4TDV8 means the exchange rear calliper are around £170 each Big Cry
