Storing/mothballing l322 - what should I be thinking about

After the excitement of finally owning a Westminster l322.....and looking forward to a number of road trips across the Balkans, Russia and just around Romania as my work calendar was empty .... it looks like in the next 2- 5 weeks I will be heading to Cambodia to work for 2 years. Not expected only asked for CV yesterday and offered contract today.

So it means that I will have to park her up for a while. I will have friends move into my house so they can do any activities like a monthly ctek hook up - or should I disconnect battery ?
I will get the chassis well jet washed to remove any lingering salt .....
Will give the seats a good clean with leather conditioner.
The car will be parked under an outside carport and plan to hang some HD rubber pond liner to act as a barrier from direct sunlight etc on the rear - rest of car will be in shade.

What else should I be thinking of? maybe a monthly start and leave to tick over for a while until up to temp?

I might get back every 4 months to use for a few days. Will have to do same with wife's polo!

Cant believe that just after I make the investment this comes up! Series 2a LWB Hardtop - ex British Aerospace that was then used in an armed robbery! not by me!

2003 TD5 Discovery2 - now sold
and the 2 wheeled Range Rover - BMW R 1150GSA

and finally the big lady of my dreams... 2012 Westminster - gives me a smile every morning

2 years - TBH, I'd just sell it and buy another when you're ready - 2 years can turn into 3 or 4......

Firstly, congratulations on getting the job 👍👍

I worry about leaving mine parked up when I go on holidays for 4 weeks or so.
2 years is too long , especially outside, covered or not.
Vermin, mice etc. will be a problem.
You would presumably still have to pay annual insurance premium.
The more I think about it, I agree with previous replies.
Sell it and save up to buy newer L405 replacement when you return.

If I was in UK - would sell - but the effort to sell a UK car in Romania is huge and will simply not have time.
Mice - ummm maybe a pest repellent plugged in in the car Series 2a LWB Hardtop - ex British Aerospace that was then used in an armed robbery! not by me!

I know this is not the same but when I bought my l322 I parked my p38 in the garden and didn't start it or even look at it for 3 years after a boost to the battery it started no problem but there were airbag faults etc etc all easy to clear but the big problem was mould it was everywhere so be careful of air circulation

1 of the RRs I looked at last year prior to buying the one we have now had been stored for 18 months by someone who'd got a job in Malaysia, then finally accepted he was going to spend longer there & he couldn't justify the cost of importing it into Malaysia.

The car was in a shocking condition, with surface rust on virtually every bit of steel in the engine bay, suspension components, exhaust, subframes etc - even though all these parts are painted / treated in some way.
I was initially thinking of negotiating the price down to cover the work to refurb everything, but finally decided you'd have to strip the whole car apart to make any improvements & that it wasn't worth it as there were much better cars out there that weren't that much more expensive.

I could only think that temperature changes were causing condensation on all the metal, which was then not dried off by driving & airflow, so caused unchecked corrosion.

Superficially, you'd think you have the advantage of a lower than standard mileage car when you come back, but that could be offset by a much deteriorated car that won't get the price it was worth.

Based on seeing that car & seeing the state of various friends off-roaders that only get driven once per month, I'd sell it & buy a replacement when I returned. Paul,

Is there such a thing as professional car storage in Romania? Probably used for exotic cars and therefore expensive, but maybe worth investigating? Or if you trust your friends, ask them to drive it every six weeks for, say, 50 miles each time?

I agree that just leaving it untouched for 2+ years is unwise, but getting it back to the UK and sold is a headache for you.

Could you find a dealer in the UK that would sell it for you, in the UK on a commission basis? It must be possible to hire a gentleman to drive it back to the UK from the Balkans?

Just some ideas, hope it works out. Oh, and I hope Cambodia will be unforgettable, in a good way. Best of luck.

Think about the selling comments - you'll loose I dunno 1k or more per year in depreciation.

. Cheers, Greg

However challenging it may be, I strongly believe the right thing to do is sell it. I know that is not what you want to hear but there you go. Confused

Imaging the damage one winter of mouse invasion will do to the car! Electrical gremlins are bad enough, let alone having to repair a half eaten loom! Rolling with laughter And if they get into the cabin.......... Censored Censored

Tyres will perish through lack of use, depreciation will be well in excess of £1k per annum I would suggest and the list goes on.

Advertise it on here - someone may fancy flying out and a fun road trip back. You never know.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do. Bish.

If you decide to keep it, buy an outside carcoon if there is one big enough which will help with surface rust etc..

Personally, if I couldn't take it with me I would be advertising it now.

I'd drive it home from your location if I was in the market (at the right price of course) so I'd also advise selling it before you start your job. I'm sure if your vehicle is a good one a UK buyer would hop on a plane and drive it back. __
