Will be interested to hear how you get on and what you think of their cars. I've got a craving to have an LR product on my drive again and they seem to have a good range.

Am tying myself in knots. I should just take the plunge and accept I will get no more than 15mpg driving in London.
I’ve had an ML63 before which burnt petrol like no ones business.
At least, I feel, with the Land Rover that I won’t be burning rubber all the time due to its weight and non sport like characteristics

While the SO has only had diesels as a daily runabout for 14 years, I've only ever owned one diesel car and the others they've all been petrols. I used to run an Audi RS2 and when she was going well 18 mpg on super unleaded was the best you could expect. I used her daily and the cost of fuel was far outweighed by the 5 cylinder burble and the pleasure of owning and driving such an iconic car.

I'm really tempted by a V8 supercharged RRS or FFRR if I can persuade the the joint holder of the purse strings to let me add a fourth car to our fleet

You know you want one too. Why not look at some V8 diesels too and then at least you've considered a slightly more sensible option.

I’ve been told not to buy diesels by a specialist Land Rover garage and also the manager of a Land Rover service department near me (they don’t have a sales arm attached to it, he was just being reallly decent and honest)

Andy - I had exactly the same thoughts, and I was only moving from a Defender 110 TD5 to an FFRR 5.0 S/C.

The Defender wasn't exactly the most economical car either, so I had a fairly low starting point. A 5.0 S/C will never be super economical, especially in town/traffic, but if you do throw in some motorway cruising as well, it's not too bad overall.

I decided given my relatively low yearly mileage that the difference between 25-26mpg from the Defender to 18-20 for the FFRR wasn't going to make a huge difference. If I was only going to do city driving in it and get 13-15mpg, I might have reconsidered, but I convinced myself for my typical driving routes that 20mpg was achievable (which it is for me at least in real life), and I could live with that!

Having driven diesel Defenders since I was 16, the the FFRR in 5.0 S/C guise is a revelation to me, and whilst I do enjoy using the massive power for accelerating when necessary, it is vaguely economical if driven more sensibly and outside of constant traffic.
