Restricted Performance

Was on the motorway with empty Ifor Williams trailer sitting at about 55 - 60 miles per hour. On gentle acceleration I had Restricted Performance come up on the dash display. Stopped for diesel and when I restarted everything was fine. Spoke to my local independent and they said could have been a sticking EGR valve or MAF sensor. Next time I am down their way they will put computer on it and see what fault codes are logged. Anybody else out there have similar issue? 2012 MY 4.4 TDV8 diesel with approximately 60,000 on the clock.

Hey buddy,

I had exactly the same problem. I found that if I did not go over 2000 revs I would not get the "restricted performance" message. The moment during acceleration I exceeded 2000 revs, the message would pop up! You have to switch off - wait a minute and then restart and everything is fine. (until it happens again).

As Mike has said - check the intercooler hoses first. I have a picture in the thread above showing the split in mine - mine was the top right hose(if you are facing the car). You may need to move the material that covers the right hand hose to find the split. There are four hoses, two long ones at the top and two shorties at the bottom. Lift the plastic engine cover off first.

Its a very quick replacement if this is where your problem is.

The blue hoses in this thread are the top intercooler hoses. http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic32550-15.html MY2010 Range Rover Vogue SE

Zim,
Your picture refers to the 3.6 tdV8, but this is a 4.4 tdV8.

It will be the top right hose. The 2,000 rpm scenario is the point at which the second turbo kicks in.

Fault code will refer to a fault with the DPF, but it will be the hose. Advisable to replace all 4 at the same time.

If it trips into restricted performance at 2500rpm, I would suspect the air change over valve may be sticking, but reading the fault codes would confirm this.

Next day I was sitting in the car parked with the engine running when DPF Full came up. Spoke to both Independent and Main Dealer - both recommended a 20 minute run - tried that to no avail. I now need a Forced Regeneration. I have only had the vehicle for about a month but my journeys are usually some length. Also noticed when I start the vehicle for a short time when it is cold and then stop it there is a smoke like emission from the side vent behind the nearside front wheel which is accompanied by a "funny" smell. Any ideas what this could be? Still really like the vehicle but I can see the honeymoon period could throw up a few issues!

The smoke from the wheel arch is likely to be the fuel burning heater which will come on if it is below 5 degrees C and run on a bit if you have just travelled a short distance. That seems normal and while not nice e.g. if you are in a garage with a car emitting the fumes, is not a defect in the car. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Dave when your DPF (yellow) light comes on it's time to get on a bit of road and keep it at 50mph. You don't need the revs up, the engine management will sort it but it might need a 10min run at 50mph.

Unfortunately if you put it off it will turn to a red warning and you'll need a dealer to do it.

Aside of your sensor issue, all depends on your journey usage patterns. Regular motorway use would normally mean the car will do it itself as part of your journey but mine rarely gets on the motorway as I have a lot of short runs. Which cause my DPF yellow light to come on once every 4-5 weeks. Mine clears in 2-3 mins at 50mph.

Search DPF here and you'll find loads.

Good luck, Greg Cheers, Greg

Greg,

I tried the fast run up the motorway several times but to no avail. My journeys are usually some distance and involve trailer work and motorways. Only bought the vehicle about 2000 miles ago and can only assume the previous owner did a lot of short journeys. I have avoided driving the vehicle until I can get it to my local independent after Easter and they will do a forced regeneration. Hopefully with my driving habits it will regenerate prior to the DPF Full warning coming up in future. Our local main dealer did say that if the car was driven until the red warning came on and restricted performance ensued 9 times out of 10 a forced regeneration would fail and a new DPF would be needed - food for thought.

Thanks again Greg.

I would suggest its time t check your fault codes too sir... There is often an underlying fault that overfuels the engine, filling the DPF prematurely... Thumbs Up
