starting issue,

hi guys

i have a problem with my battery power but not sure if it is likely to be the battery or something else: i will explain best i can what happens/ happened etc

i dont use my car every day, perhaps 2/3 times a week on short runs, no more than 20 km and the occasional run of between 70/130 km once a month;

it is sitting in a garage and i can use it one day;after starting no problem: use it and park back in garage and go out to it next day and will start perfect; other times it will be flat; !! sometimes it can stand for 2/3 days and still start perfect but other times it wont, mainly when we have minus temp is the most problem with going flat,

yesterday i had to charge it enough to get it started to go on one of the longer runs 70km; i got there, switched off for an hour, got back in and started perfect; drove for half hour, stopped for 15 mins, started fine; drove another half hour; pulled in a parking area; turned off to position one to let cd play for 15 mins; went to start and flat !!!

no jump leads Rolling with laughter Censored Censored , 50 k from home: middle of the countyside, but managed to get a friend to come out with leads and jump start to get home; put car in garage at 5pm; started it in morning at 10am perfect; pulled out the garage, switched off; 4 hours later tried to start it; flat !!!

just charged it again, looked at the sight glass which shows green which i assume says its charged ok: starts no problem; but now im worried taking it out on the road again,

this battery was fitted nov 2012 and is 110ah varta;

the breakdown in the layby was bizarre considering the distance i had traveled and the ign light was not lite so guess it was being charged; so would my cd player have pulled the batt down in 15 mins ?

the cable to earth from batt seems clean and tight and the cable from jump start position to starter also seems ok not that ive taken them off but they are tight;

does it sound that it was /is loosing its power or should i be looking elsewhere? i have not checked its cranking power with a meter, but its not every day it does it so do i just bite the bullet and fit new in the hope it is past its day

The battery is finished chap. You say its from Nov 2012 so its time to replace it. It will keep letting you down until it fails completely. Fatty's are hard on battery's anyway and given the use the car gets Its done well to last that long.

OK thanks, i did wonder; but do you think 110ah is suitable enough or should i go for something else ???

Hi Stan

ok thanks , i dont know if my old one was 020, but it was Varta 110

i will take a look, it was about 190 euro here, but would imagine cheaper on line ??

Just survived the winter (although it still seems to be going on!) by plugging in the FFRR to the cTek every night with the same Varta L1 110aH which went in @ 2014. Got fed up and bought a new one, problems gone away.

Get a new battery.

Make sure you have a stool to stand on to take out and put in (unless you are 7ft tall), and if doing it outside and it is windy put a stay on the bonnet in service mode (broom handle or similar) Thumbs Up .

i know what you mean about the plugging in, and the stool !!!, it is one mother Censored to lift out !!!

i guess i haven't done bad considering it was fitted 2012 !!!

glad the winter is nearly over, yes even the dordogne gets it Whistle

We baulk at the price of new batteries and the regularity of having to change them in an FFRR, but then it is really only the price of a tank of petrol/diesel. Just do 500 miles less one month Smile .

Does anyone know whether 2010-12 TDV8's are kinder to batteries? They have all this gubbins that monitors the state of the battery, so does that extend its life? My car is still on the original battery (I think) which is now 6 years old but it seems OK, and hasn't given me any problems.

Am I right in thinking the newer FFRR use an AGM battery. 2007 Vogue TDV8 in Zermatt Silver with Charcoal
