I went for Cooper AT3 in 285/50/20 for winter and the shooting season. The rest of the year I am running 275/40/22 on Turbines 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17 |

Which is best - a dedicated tyre or a compromise ? I think you know the answer Whether it’s worthwhile in the U.K. is a much more subjective question. I’ve run winter and summer tyres on my cars for many years, I’d always rather spend the money and know I have the best available, but understand that many people won’t and a good all season tyre isn’t a bad compromise. Smaller wheels won’t buy you anything - except a better outcome if you skid into a kerb Grabbers look but IMHO they aren’t as good on tarmac as a regular road tyre, so it depends what kind of driving you mostly do. On 20’s I ran Vred’s and on my 22’s I run winter conti’s - both have been really good |

Winter you need narrow tyres to cut through rain, snow, mud etc.

/\ is the theory, but you have to go a good bit narrower to make a material difference - then they both look and your insurance com-any are likely to have something to say.

I put 235/65/19 pirellis. They are 1 inch taller which makes the speedo sync with the GPS speed. They are about 1 inch narrower. This from 255/45/19. Much better in rain/snow and deep snow. Closeout at $56 USD was the real selling point. |

Goodyear Duratrac 255/55R19 here, have been fine in snow, reasonable on ice, but full winters will be better. Have heard good reports of Pirelli Scorpion winter but not used myself, also Vredestein Wintrax. Duratracs OK off road and not too noisy/compromised on road. But limited to 100mph approval. There is also a 255/55R20 which would work on 20" wheels, including on 405s, again speed approval issue applies, I tell my insurers, no problems there so far.

I've had a set of Wintrac Extremes on an old set of 19" wheels from the 4.4 petrol FF days. They've not been needed every year, but when they are (like this year) there's nothing quite like a FF on winters for feeling confident about getting any place you need to go. Dodging numpties is still a problem and clearly doing only 30mph as I was tonight was way too slow for the guy 6 feet behind me in his cart sprung pickup - but luckily for both of us he turned off my route before hitting me! Roads around here are just a couple of inches deep in compacted snow/ice with high snow banks where the ploughs have thrown the rest. No problem for the FF up or downhill...very impressive. After several different winter tyres over last 10 years - my favorites are Continental Winter Contact TS 850 P SUV - on standard westie wheels. Feels so planted, stops well on snow, compacted ice and in wet.
