My take on ICE

OK a little background, I’m a Brit in France, and as an old buffer I’m also a dedicated BBC R4 fan. In order to receive good quality British Radio on the move I use the Data on my Telephone connected to the Fatty via a BT Grom unit which replaced the CD Changer. I also use Android Auto on my Telephone as I can do most things hands free with the OK Google commands or with the steering wheel controls.

Since I got the Fatty I’ve been wanting to upgrade the Stereo & have followed all the Android head unit threads with great interest (inc Haylands great thread). But as much as I would like to stick a flashy new head unit in the Fatty I’m still going to have to use my phone to provide the Data stream. It then occurred to me that I have a decent tablet that I hardly use which will take a sim card so I formed a cunning plan which will probably give you a laugh.

Firstly I made some aluminum brackets which I glued some strong Neodymium Magnets to. Making sure they were no where near the sim card or the SD card in my tablet I also glued a pair to the shell case that fits onto my tablet.

I then slid the brackets into the gaps top & bottom of the screen which allow the unused Tape Player to be exposed. These are a good friction fit & don’t move.

Now all I have to do is stick the tablet to the brackets, let it connect to the Grom unit Android Auto automatically opens up. This might sound like a bit of a pain but as I live in the sticks I’m happy to leave it in place & I only remove it when I’m somewhere busy or dodgy.

I need to find a tidier way to wire it up but it’ll do for now

One good thing about leaving it in place, when I park the beast up in front of the house it connects to the house WiFi thus saving Data on my sim card & allowing any updates to be performed whilst on WiFi. I’ve put a 12gig data card in the tablet which cost 30quid & should last about a year, I’ve also put one in my phone & reduced my phone package to a basic 5euro a month. If all goes well and it has for the past month I’ll save about 200 euros a year.

Sorry if I bored you but I’ve had fun.
