2003 L322 TD6 access to Exhaust manifold and turbo?

How can I get access to the exhaust manifold? on the 2003 TD6 engine After removing the Air filter cover, there is the bottom air cleaner body how is this removed to give clear access to the ehaust manifold and turbo?
I can't seem to find much in RAVE.

I have been considering the same job myself, you can either take all the inlet manifold off and I think possibly cam cover - there is a guy on YouTube that has done it that way but if you want to remove the turbo the easier way I have read about is to remove the 3 rubber bungs in the bottom of the air filter housing which uncovers the turbo bolts , remove the exhaust and take the turbo out from below which is how it says to do it in Rave.
There are a few versions of Rave but I think the one in the Wiki is the full interactive pdf that includes the TD6 engine as my other version only covers the V8 Petrol .

I found this and he says it can be done without all the work in the long winded youtube tutorial.
Unfortunately the pics on the post are gone as photobucket changed their hosting policy. but he is the write up link.

I have a copy of that rave. I do not want to remove the turbo, i want to check my manifold bolts , check the turbo hoes etc, If I can gain access from the top it would make life easier.

That's pretty much the procedure you have seen on youtube then i believe with the injectors out and camshaft cover etc. If you look in rave under TD6 exhaust manifold gasket that will tell you where you need to go as the bottom of the air cleaner box is part of the camcover looking at it.

These are the turbo piccs which are missing off the other thread anyway

What a sod of a job having to remove all that just to remove the bottom cover of the air filter compartment! so to check exhaust manifold bolts etc, that you need to strip the top part of the engine GRRRRRRR!

I know, i wanted to check the turbo actuator which is right below it but unless you can feel your way up from underneath then its got to come out from what i can see. Sad

I think if you have done it before and the covers were off underneath and above with the air filter out and the bolts weren't seized, then i don't think it would take long but 20 minutes i think would be pushing it Very Happy
The OP may be able to access his manifold nuts that way.

I'll let you know if i have to take it off, i massaged the actuator today, put in some forte turbo cleaner, put in a new actuator solenoid as that was doing some weird things and cleaned the MAP sensor. Also put in a new EGR thermostat that has brought the temperature up so 90 % of the time it sits bang in the middle of the gauge.

It is still over boosting occasionally but a lot better but if it is still playing up i'll disconnect the actuator which puts it into lower boost and then whip it off when i get time and clean the variable nozzle vanes.

The MPG has gone from 17 when it was really not happy and a run up the motorway with some heavier acceleration was reading 28 mpg which is a good sign....

Took the turbo off the TD6 on Sunday and it was surprisingly easy although it still took me 2 hours which included getting all 4 wheels up onto sleepers which meant using a small step ladder to do the engine bits.
The turbo bolts that are accessed through the bottom of the air filter box are like a fine spline but I had a set of Britool sockets that fitted, I think they may be 12 point.
Exhaust is incredibly easy and can be removed from the turbo complete, two nuts to turbo , one at centre support and one either side at the rear. I lowered it on a trolley jack at the rear with a block of wood supporting across the two pipes going into the back box .

The hardest and most time consuming part was accessing the lower of the two bolts that held on the air pipe where it bolts to the MAF. I used a long Alan key that just fitted without hitting the radiator.

Separating the turbo housing however has been very difficult and I am waiting on delivery of an oxy/ mapp torch .

What was terrible, I couldn’t believe how easy it was ?
I might have to take it off again to adjust the actuator so was thinking of doing a time challenge.

I chose the longest route, remove the whole top, and I can tell you that it was not easy, since the car has 300,000 km I took the opportunity to take a look at all the other components.
DEFINITELY I will never do it again !!!!

ok, yes i have seen the youtube video of that and it looks like a massive job. The landrover method is to remove the turbo from underneath but if you wanted to check your inlet manifold and other components then it makes sense to do it the top off way but sounds like it is a pain
did you injectors come out ok ?
