HOW MUCH!!? Jeez, my 2003 4.4 Petrol can just about manage 12mpgs towing, although it does tow with apparent ease (subjectively, clearly working much harder than a SC does!). Had the car for 11 years now, covered about 60k miles in it (just clocked over 100k now), roughly 75% towing a horse box with two big horses aboard. No major issues. I think if I was towing 2 horses with a 5.0SC I would constantly be thinking about the quote Clarkson made when Volvo launched the 850 T5 Estate all those years ago - enough acceleration to give your Labrador whiplash........ Current Fleet:-

Yeah, I got about 14 out of that BMW V8 engine when towing and despite the massive step increases in performance of the two SCs over that, they've got successively more efficient. Impressive innit!? Mike - MPx

Interesting point Alistair, this has come up quite a lot over the years, I got mine at 2 years old in 2006 and have a feeling based on this sort of feedback that it may have been chipped as it was in no way slow, it has towed effortlessly c.3 tonne all over the UK doing around 100,000 since I have had it (80% towing). I unfortunately dabbled with a TDV8 sport for a bit, yes it was quicker, more torque etc, and I imagine much better in an FFRR but the TD6 has been great and I won't hear a word against them (apart from the gearbox obviously) PS my current work ride is an Aston V12 so I know fast cars ! |

and if you pop the 4.2 into sport mode it holds the gear longer , great for towing ,fantastic for driving |

I agree, you won't hear a word against them - above the cacophony of the diesel din! Hey, I had my TD6 for almost 8 years. It did a huge amount of work for me including taking +80 tonnes of spoil from a basement dig. I loved the car and thought it was fantastic, but quiet and fast it was not. ...and mine had a tuning box. No idea how bad it would've been without it. < 200 bhp for a 2.5 tonne car and 3.5 tonne trailer is too little. |

Well I shifted a milling machine for my father, total trailer weight was 3.5 tonnes and the TDV8 did notice it but it was still effortless. Averaged 19mpg over the Welsh mountains.

I tow 2 horses regularly, 14.2 section D and ISH 16.2 with an old rice trailer, as you know.
