I moved cars on the trailer several times with my SC. The car never had a problem towing the trailer and never had a problem maintaining motorway speeds no matter the load. I'd say it was equally as capable as our TDV8's have been.

When I had my SC I was doing 4-5k miles a year, it was more important for me to have a car I liked and enjoyed.

Fuel costs are not an issue as mileage is so low, TD6 delivered sub 20 towing so we are talking minimal £amounts per year. My concern, and I know it is unfounded, is that the diesels are effortless and a petrol may struggle. I have never used a petrol for towing hence the question. |

I've towed many double horse boxes around the country - in my 2004 4.4 Petrol, previous to that 4 x Ford Explorers 4.0 Petrols. I also occasionally use a Shogun 3.5 petrol to tow too. Horseboxes as well as fully loaded 3500kg flatbeds loaded with hay. The petrol automatics tow wonderfully - but my new 4.4 TDV8 is in a league of its own towing - as Stan says, the torque is incredible and that 8 speed box makes short shrift of towing.

I've regularly used all of my FFs to tow a car-trailer-and-car (something over 2 tons) or a Plant-trailer-and-digger (also north of 2 tons). Was absolutely fine in my 4.4 Petrol V8, easier still in the 4.2 SC and capable of ludicrous mode in the 5.0 - not that you would go near that with animals on board. I've never owned and therefore towed with an oil burner but cant imagine it would offer any noticeable improvement - and I know its less fun once unhitched. The 5.0 is around 17mpg when I'm towing...the 4.2 was 15 or 16. Mike - MPx

If you find the TD6 ok for towing then any of the petrols will be a step up. I've towed loads with the TD6 - a 3500kg trailer fully loaded. It's agony when you reach a long incline. You either put your foot down and get deafened, or face a long slow grind up the hill. |
