Annoying hissing under load

Hi, Had my vogue for years now and love it, however it’s started hissing under load at the drivers side. It sounds like a boost leak. Had some paint work done on it last year and the battery ended up flat, the garage jump started it causing damage to the alternator so the car went into the garage to get a new one. Got the car back, had smoke whilst driving and lumpy running. They replaced both intercooler pipes. I then heard the hissing noise which has been there over a year now - slowly driving me mad. Been to a few garages, first garage found the turbo air inlet pipe had been damaged when the alternator was done, replaced that but still have the hissing noise. Can anyone save me from madness and point me in the right direction? I have a 07 tdv8 L322.

Still sounds like an air hose. Also check the matrix and endcaps of the intercooler itself.

Might be best to find a LR independent and just give them free reign. Get it over with once and for all.

Thanks for the speedy response. New to the forum and really appreciate it.
How would I go about checking the matrix and cap ends?
I’ve had it in to a few specialist in my area and not had much luck to be honest. A few have said they can’t make the vehicle make the hissing, it won’t do it when it’s stationary if it’s revved up. Only when the vehicle is driving under load.

look for damage. Failed welds, punctured matrix etc. The Inter-cooler is basically the same idea as your engine radiator, so look for the sort of damage that would let out water, and you can bet it'll let out air. Make sure the hoses are on square, not half on/half off.

Being as it sounds like its a turbo pipe area thing (due to the need for pressure before you hear the noise) also check joints and gaskets. If there's any unexplained new oil residue, you're in the right area as a Turbo system leak will often spit out tiny amounts of oil.

I once traced a split hose on my Jaguar thanks to the fact it had painted the side of the engine where the split was with a blotch of oil.

Thanks for the reply again.

I did notice some black crud around the intercooler top hoses. Like black residue. Could this be related ? Wondering if maybe the garage has used cheap pipes.

The best idea is to wipe off any oil you find, and drive it for a little bit to see if it comes back. I would expect any garage worth the money you pay them to clean hoses and other components if they're going to re-use them, so i'd say you've found a very likely suspect there.

Thanks for that, I will check them in the morning. It must be something that they have removed to do the alternator as the noise wasn’t there before. Is there any other pipes at the drivers side lower down that could be the issue? Sorry for all the questions never looked any lower down than the top cover Laughing as I’m a builder Smile

Sorry chap, i'm not really much use on specifics, I've only had mine since November. I do believe the TDV8 has a surprisingly large number of hoses however, so rule nothing out in your pursuit of the source.

Also it's possible if the alternator was slightly unobliging, some damage may have been accidentally caused, so i wouldn't confine yourself to just what would need to be directly removed.

Never thought of them causing damage to something. Seen as though they had already put a screwdriver through the turbo air inlet pipe this is probably highly likely. Is there any way of testing the intercooler? Are they easy to change? Thanks for all your help

Sorry mate, you're rapidly exceeding my knowledge, I can only hope one of the more experienced forum members chimes in in that regard. I shouldn't think its too difficult to change, but i'm willing to bet it's buried somewhere awful to get to, likely best accessed from underneath the front bumper (which would mean removal of the undertray).

Hope one of the more technical regulars spots your post, I'm not really equipped to answer these questions.

Have you removed the plastic cover over the engine, so that you can see the condition of the other "boost" hoses.
Our tdv8 had a split in 1 of the 2 90 degree hoses that goes from the plenum chamber to the inlet manifold.

Hiya, thanks for your reply.

No I haven’t removed the cover as of yet, I will do in the morning and check the pipes you mentioned.
I didn’t know about these pipes so hopefully one of them is the cause. Was your vehicle making a whistle hiss under load with this fault?

Mark,
The noise was surprisingly quiet, more a "woosh" than whistle - but only under boost / load.
I guess with a smaller split in the hose, the loss in boost would be less, so the noise would be higher frequency / whistle like.
It doesn't sound like you've noticed much loss in performance or economy ?

It's also worth checking all the hose clamps on all of the boost hoses to make sure they're tight.
As well as the split hose I also found the clamps on 1 of the straight hoses at the back (nearer the bulkhead) were loose.
The clamps are moulded into the hose rubber, so if the hose is misaligned, it's very difficult to get a socket onto them to tighten them. Paul,
